The suns were high in the sky, birds flying overhead, as Zinnia and I walked down the street, arm and arm. Ruhn was nestled in her hair, studying the new world around us as we walked.

The issue was how quiet the streets were. Halrao was a fairly sizable city for their tribe, with row after row of homes. Though home wasn’t the right term, per se. They were more like compounds, with multiple homes connected to a barn and a large yard space that was fenced off from the rest of the city. Outside of the family compounds was basically a ghost town; there was an almost eerie emptiness to the rest of Halrao.

“I told Cadoc I couldn’t live here like this,” I admitted when I spotted several Rowdu watching us from the safety of their windows and yards. We smiled, but the gesture generally wasn’t returned.

“Uh oh. How did he take that?” She slowed down as she waited for me to answer.

“I have no idea. After I asked a few questions then explained my side of things, I walked away.” The last thing I wanted was for him to tell me a reactive answer. It required more thought.

“Have any Rowdu ever had a mate choose not to live here?” she mused, glancing around. “I’m not even the one who was chosen as a mate, and it kind of freaks me out. At least I have the option to leave.”

“It’s funny that you think you can leave me now,” I teased. Both of us started laughing, the sound all too loud in the emptiness of the open space, drawing more Rowdu to peer at us as we walked. We’d be the talk of all the households today. “Dude, do they not even take walks?”

“I’m going with no. But how do they buy and trade things? Get their food?” It was a good question, one I couldn’t begin to answer.

“They don’t work outside the home or for money, I’d assume.”

“It’s like a cult.” I’d have laughed at her words if they weren’t so fucking true.

“Maybe it’s time to visit Noctis and learn a bit more about this place,” I muttered. Before I could say anything else, we reached the end of the road. A copse of trees stood in the way, but beyond that was the distinct sound of water.

“It’s hot out, so I vote we go explore that,” she said, letting go of my arm before she ran through the grass and trees. Vibrant leaves hung low enough she nearly disappeared altogether. There was the tiniest spike of worry, but I soothed it away, glad to hear her laugh and let loose.

With one last glance behind me, I followed her in. The air became cooler as I disappeared into the trees, the yellow leaves reflecting the sunshine and covering everything in a warm glow. The cover opened up into a clearing right over a river that had a slightly startling appearance. The water here was a blood red that I’d never seen before.
