Wednesday 25th December - Christmas Day

Grandparents arrived with a live chicken in a sack (UR). I knew I should have been more specific and prayed for an oven-ready turkey.

Lucky went mad barking while Grandma untied the sack, stuck her hand in and grabbed the chicken by the legs. (According to Simon, Grandma grew up naked on a pig farm in Guangdong province during the revolution, so nothing phases her.) Then she struggled over to the sink with it still upside down, plonked it on the draining board and hacked off its head. AAAARRRGGGHHHH! She didn’t even warn us!

Then while she was draining the blood out of the chicken’s neck, it struggled free and zigzagged its way out into the garden, with Lucky barking behind. Up till now, I’d only heard rumours that headless chickens could still run about, but now I can say I have seen it with my very own eyes.

Couldn’t bring myself to eat it after that. At least it took my mind off Warren.
