Traumatic Experiences, Grief and Mourning
Exposure to traumatic events can interfere with mourning. Avoidance that may be protective in coping with the memories of a traumatic event may make it difficult for the bereaved to mourn their loss because the memories of the lost person are always accompanied by painful memories of the circumstances of the loss, so ‘remembering’ is too painful. In such circumstances, the traumatic symptoms may need treatment before the bereaved person is able to mourn.
