Jane joined them, smiling in that comfortable way she had.
âYou must be hungry,â Jez said, standing up to help her to a chair. âAre you sure you donât want me to send out for something fresh?â
âI am hungry.â She looked at the table. âNo use wasting good food, however rich you are, Mr Winter. And this looks delicious to me.â
âYes, maâam.â
They sat round the table, eating the simple food prepared to tempt a childâs appetite.
âI enjoyed it,â Jez said afterwards.
Jane smiled at him. âGood. Now, I can see how tired you are, and itâs been an eventful day for me and Tom, so we should all go to bed.â
Jez gave his slightly crooked smile. âYou sound like youâre mothering us, too.â
She looked from one to the other and reached out to pat each manâs arm in turn. âYou seem to need it â both of you. Iâve never had children of my own, but I wanted them very badly. And since my husband died, Iâve mothered quite a few lost souls. But youâve only to tell me if I step out of line. Iâve not been a nanny before, not had anything to do with famous folk, either, so I donât know exactly what Iâm supposed to do.â
Jez picked up her hand and raised it to his lips. âDo what seems right to you, Jane. There are no rules and I donât need anyone to curtsey to me. Iâve really enjoyed your company tonight. But youâre right: I am exhausted. So Iâll leave you now.â Yawning, he wandered off to his bedroom.
Tom looked at Jane. âHeâs kind, isnât he?â
âVery. But heâs lonely. Itâs a good thing you got in touch with him. Heâll help you to spread your wings and youâll give him family to love. Swanning around with young women who donât wear enough clothes and staying up late like heâs been doing isnât good for anyone. Now, Iâd better go and unpack.â
Tom let Craig escort him down to his own room on the floor below. When he was alone, he looked round and sighed. It felt empty and unwelcoming. Comfortable as the bed was, it took him a long time to get to sleep, because his head was spinning with the dayâs events.
But he was on the right track now, he was sure of it, and wouldnât waste this opportunity to make a new life for himself and his children.
His main worry was Gail. She was like a loose cannon. You never knew what sheâd do next.
Itâd be best if she accepted Jezâs offer to go into rehab!
No. He couldnât see her agreeing to that. But he desperately didnât want to drag his kids through the courts â and he didnât know what heâd do if he lost custody of them to her.
