The Harder They Come
Three weeks after giving birth, I flew to Page, Arizona, for my second Vogue photoshoot with Richard Avedon. I panicked at first because I couldnât take Chastity with me, but Sonny insisted I do it because the exposure would be good and keep us in the public eye. The German nurse heâd hired to take care of Chas was good with the baby but too strict with me. She was so tall and built like a wrestler and acted as if I would drop Chas or somehow hurt her. I didnât know much about taking care of a baby, but I wasnât a complete idiot. She hardly allowed me to touch my child, and it got to the point where Iâd sneak in early in the morning, grab Chas, bring her back to my room, and lock the door. The German woman would follow, clomping down the hall after me because sheâd had one of the first spinal infusions and it made her footsteps really heavy and uneven. Sheâd call to me outside my bedroom, âMrs. Bono. Please open ze door!â I couldnât wait to get rid of her once I got home from the shoot.
Gee flew with me to Arizona, while Sonny stayed home to organize a new tour and work out the final recording schedule for my next album. Thank God. It was the first fun thing Iâd done in months and was really wonderful because I was on my own with Gee, Richard, and Ara Gallant, and I met a man named Maurice Hogenboom, who was a photographer and model that the casting director had selected to be shot with me. He was beautiful, very sweet, and about a thousand feet tall. This shoot was to be the third installment in a series Diana Vreeland had organized: Veruschka had already been shot in Japan, Toots (Anjelica Huston) was shot in Ireland, and now I was to be the third spread to finish out the series. I had my figure back already, so they didnât have to hide a bump, and they dressed me in Giorgioâs modern takes on Native American dress. They gave me some outrageous makeup that looked like I was wearing feathers for eyelashes or had a cowâs skull inked on my forehead. And they draped me with turquoise Navajo jewelryâsparking a lifelong love. There were also some fabulous embellished belts with fringe, bone necklaces, and amazing arm cuffs.
I felt free and relaxed on set. Everyone was treating me like an adult and nobody was trying to control me. Arizona in April was freezing, and one day I had to get into a lake and stand about waist-deep in the water for a while holding a piebald pony by a rope halter. Richard set up his cameras on the shores of Lake Powell and had us posing up against red rocks or mountain backdrops. I was shivering so badly. Richard kept giving me shots of brandy and I got so drunk. When we got back to the hotel, my sister put me right in a bath.
