Twenty-Two

“Who did this to you?” Devlin leaned his hands on her desk, scowling at her.

Sitting on the other side, Charlie strove for patience. After traveling all day, she was tired and in no mood for an interrogation, no matter how well intentioned. But Devlin had ambushed her as she arrived on her doorstep. Now they were in her study, and it was past midnight. All she wanted was a bath and her own bed.

She’d barely slept the night before…and the reason for it caused resentment to bubble. A part of her knew she was being unfair. Sebastian had told her he didn’t sleep with Eleni Pappas—or Maria Delaney, rather—and she believed him. She still hadn’t liked walking in on the pair looking so cozy. After the soul-melting passion she’d shared with Sebastian, the last thing she’d wanted to see was another woman’s hands on him…especially an attractive female like Maria.

Admit it, you’re jealous. And for no good reason.

Charlie hated her insecurity. It was something she’d worked hard to overcome, and to a degree, she had: with the society she’d built and her circle of friends, she knew her own worth. Yet Sebastian had a way of making her feel like that girl lost in the market again, desperate to find someone she could trust, to be protected, to be seen…

Her chest constricting, she focused on the here and now.

“I understand that you mean well.” Seeing the concern in Devlin’s eyes, she softened her tone. “As I’ve said, I am not hurt. We can discuss this further in the morning—”

“I am not leaving until you tell me what is going on. You left with no explanation and were gone for days. Now you return looking like a prizefighter—not a successful one, I might add.” Devlin straightened and crossed his arms over his chest. “Does this have to do with the Quinton case?”

Out of professional courtesy, she owed him the truth.

“As a matter of fact, the case is now closed,” she said briskly. “Quinton has not been unfaithful to Amara. He is telling her the truth, probably as we speak, and how they settle things from here is their private affair. Our job is done.”

Devlin narrowed his eyes. “What was he doing with that Loveday chit?”

“They were both looking for his brother. He didn’t tell Amara because of bad blood between her and his family.”

“And did they find this brother?”

Tony Quinton’s lifeless eyes flashed in her head.

“Yes.”

“One other question.”

She raised her brows.

“What is the rest of the story you’re not telling me?”

Where do I begin?

Like the bottom drawer of her desk, there was simply too much to sort through at present. She was no fool; she knew she couldn’t investigate the First Flame Society on her own. As she’d told the Angels, their strength lay in their sisterhood. She would need her society—which included Devlin—to assist her in uncovering the anarchist plot, beginning with identifying the liquid in the vial she’d found.

Yet she balked…because of the perils.

She had no wish to endanger those closest to her.
