Darkness had set in, and I realized that I could not finish the lesson that evening. The kids had to be home before their parents got worried.

“Okay guys,” I said, “it is getting late and there is no way we can finish our lessons this evening. How about coming back tomorrow, at about 3:30 p.m., which would mean just after church, and I am sure we can conclude this subject of caving.”

“That would be lovely,” said Jason, as everyone voiced their support to him.

Chapter 9

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR A CAVER

At 3:00 p.m. on the dot the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find Marisa and Jason all dressed up and looking very smart. Marisa was stunning.

“Marisa, you are quite a beautiful lady.” She blushed, which made her look prettier than ever.

I smiled at them as I invited them in.

I gave them each a cold drink, and as they sipped I showed them photographs of the many expeditions we had had.

“This is Simon,” I said. “He is the chief co-coordinator of our project, Caving in the Abode of the Clouds. He belongs to the Orpheus Caving Club and lives in Derbyshire. This pretty lady here is Jenny, Simon’s wife.

“Now this is Dr. Boycott, or Tony as we call him, usually the expedition doctor. This guy here is our expedition mole. He simply loves small holes, which no one would ever think of even attempting. In doing so, very often he breaks into big and exciting passages. He is another Tony and you will simply love him. In Priddy, Somerset, where he lives, he is known as a very active digger. Every Thursday afternoon is devoted to his passion of digging. Quite recently, digging through an inviting space near the Hunters Club, he along with some friends broke into a cave system, which makes it so convenient for any caver to pop out of the cave into the Hunters Club for the much-needed pint of beer.”

I told them the names of each of the faces in the group photograph—Estelle, Mark, Tom, Paul, Annie, Peter, Goon, Roger, Kate, and a host of others.

“These two,” I said, “Fraser and Niki, are the video recorders of our expeditions, and between them have produced very good documentaries of our expeditions. All of them are from the United Kingdom. Here are the Germans—George, Thilo, Thomas, Herbert, Christine, Christian, Uwe, Frank, and our humble friend Daniel.

“This one-eyed pirate you see is the Austrian, Peter, who is usually sent to rig vertical caves for descent together with Mark and Tom and the Irishman Brian. This handsome guy is Robin, and next to him is Quentin, the musician and singer, and both of them are Irish. And of course, the climber in Yvo and Thomas, the perfectionist, both of whom are from Switzerland. There are many more cavers who have taken part in our expeditions, including the Americans. So you now understand that in this wonderful adventure activity of caving, we have made friends all over the world. I would love,” I added, “to have you join our expedition team and meet all of them.
