SEVENTEEN THOUSAND STARS

SEBESTIAN

I noticed the flush of her cheeks before I noticed how my body reacted to seeing her there.

“It’s Lucky.” She was out of breath.

“Wait right there, I’ll get my bag.”

“No.” Bluebird rushed forward, her hand resting on my arm before I had the chance to move. My eyes searched hers for a sign of trauma or distress. “Lucky is fine. She’s a little annoyed with me, but she is perfectly fine with that aside.”

“You’re not making any sense. Come, sit.” I guided her to the waiting room chairs where we sat, our bodies turned toward each other. “What does Lucky have to do with your being here?”

“Everything, Sebestian.” She visibly composed herself, inhaling sharply before exhaling a deep breath as her hands twisted in her lap. “I do want more from my life than just living inside this safe bubble. She was right. So were you. Ever since we lost our parents I felt like I had no choice but to take the safe route. I was all Lucky had, and she was all I had too.”

I listened as she talked while my heart squeezed at the depth of emotion she carried within the story.

“Lucky has an honesty about her that is as unexpected as it is hard to hear. She overheard our conversation and had her own opinion about it. One she determinedly thought to express without regard.”

Bluebird lifted her eyes to me, trying to gauge my reaction; I was curious to hear what her sister had to say and if her opinion hindered my cause or helped it in convincing Bluebird to take a chance on me.

“She did not hold back on telling me that she thinks you were right.” Her lips twisted, not into a smile or a frown, as she considered what her next words would be. “She called me a coward and for the reasons she had behind it were right. There is a part of me that allows me to kiss you and enjoy it while knowing that we are leaving and that will be the end of it. A finale that I am already prepared for. That part of me is so loud that it drowned out the other part of me that whispers that I can be brave too and that I too easily hide myself away.”

“You don’t need to explain yourself to me, Bluebird. I understand that freeing yourself to try something new or unexpected isn’t so easily done as it is said.” I tried to reassure her that I did understand, I had lived my life the same way until she had come along and opened my eyes to possibility. I found myself feeling bolder, enjoying my life as it had become more than I had in such a long time.

“No, Sebestian, I am not sure you do understand. I don’t want to hide away anymore, I want to be discovered. I want to know you and for you to know me. I want to take that chance with you.
