Chapter 68

Carter placed the phone receiver in it’s cradle, stepped out from behind his desk, and approached his assistant.

“Anna, could you come with me please?”

Anna, noticing that the question was less of a request and more of a command, locked her computer and followed Carter out of the room, and down the hall. She felt a sense of confusion and anxiety as Carter led her to one of the interrogation rooms, and closed the door behind them.

“Sit down, Anna. We need to have a talk.”

Anna sat in the uncomfortable chair. She was confused as to what was going on. Carter was clearly upset. She had been his assistant since he first took office almost a decade ago. She had seen the full spectrum of his moods, and the mood he was in now was one she seldom saw and had never experienced herself. He was suspicious, and she didn’t know why he was suspicious of her.

Carter walked around the room, adjusted his tie in the mirrored window, and pulled a Parker pen out of his pocket. He started pacing behind her, clicking his pen behind her ear each time he passed. Although she trusted him, and could see what he was doing in the mirror, the fact that he was hovering around her blind spot made her very uncomfortable. He was trying to ramp up her nervousness and anxiety, and he was succeeding.

“How many phone calls did you make yesterday?”

Click.

Anna turned her head to look at him, only to find that he had already changed directions. She wanted to make eye contact, but he clearly didn’t.

“I don’t know. I would have to check the call logs.”

“I suppose it’s hard to keep track of all the phone calls that come and go throughout the day.”

Click.

“So, how about I be a bit more specific. How many phone calls did you make to Atlanta yesterday?’

Click.

Anna whipped her head around to see Carter’s face.

“Head front!”

Anna was now terrified. she had no idea what she had done wrong, and yet her boss–her friend–was treating her like a convicted criminal.

“How many calls did you make to Atlanta yesterday?”

Click.

Anna struggled to control her breathing. The last time someone made her feel like this was when she was nine and her father caught her trying to sneak one of his cigarettes.

“I-I think it was four.”

Carter continued pacing, letting his hand trail behind him. Anna could see his action in the mirror and for a moment thought he was going to put a hand on her shoulder to try comforting her.

Click.

“Think hard and be specific. How many calls did you make to Atlanta yesterday?”

Anna was now on the verge of tears. She was borderline hyperventilating and had a sudden urge to urinate.

“Three. I made three calls to Atlanta yesterday.”

Click.

“Can you please stop that?”

“First it was four, now it’s three. What happened to the other call?”

Click.

“I’m trying my best to remember, but you’re making me very nervous”

Carter stopped pacing. “So, you misremembered then? So, when I check your call logs and run them against the Atlanta area code, I’ll only find three calls?”

“Yes.
