Chapter Eleven

PEYTON

“I will not agree to the practice of turning shadow beings into humans,” Rycker hissed as he got to his feet.

Even with only one wing, he was still massive.

“Just as I didn’t agree to the process of turning humans into shadow beings. It goes against everything that I believe in and is the equivalent of stealing their identities. If I was against it when they were trying to do it to humans, what makes you think I would be okay with considering doing it to shadow beings?” Rycker snarled.

He had a very good point. We would be no better than those we were fighting against if we resorted to using their same vile tactics in order to gain control.

“Besides,” Rycker continued as he stretched out his one left wing and grimaced. “The process was barely tested on humans. It’s never been tested on a shadow being. Who knows what could happen. Maybe you’d end up with a result opposite of what you are looking for.”

I could see both sides of this. I understood what Jasper was saying and I was actually both surprised and impressed that he was considering something that would help the shadow world situation, instead of just wanting to get the hell out of here now. I could also understand where Rycker was coming from, and he was right to keep hold of his ideals and morals in this situation. I felt like we were all about to get into a debate about it, when suddenly people started appearing not far off by the tree-line at the edge of the hillside.

We’d been discovered.

I quickly backed deeper into the little niche in the hill as Jasper stood at the entrance and stared down the oncoming intruders. It was a party of shadow beings led by a woman with the same giant, black wingspan that Rycker had. She was tall and slender, with flowing long, black hair that reached all the way down to her ankles. I wondered how she even walked without her hair getting twisted around her legs. Her wings were both unfurled behind her, making the rest of the people with her walk at a steep distance away to both her sides. They were massive and thick with feathers, and the tips of her wing-bones had arched bones that resembled claws. She was beautiful—and terrifying.

But perhaps the most unsettling thing about her, was the giant feather that she had attached to a belt which hung at her waist. Judging by the way that Rycker glared at her, and by the way that his face turned a disgusted shade of green when he saw the feather which bounced against the front of her thighs as she walked—it was his feather that the woman wore at her belt as a trophy. It was a token of having taken his wing. The smug smirk on the woman’s face was vile and cruelty seemed to ooze right from the corners of her mouth. I already knew the answer to the question that I was about to ask, but I needed to be sure of it.
