After the Tofurky had been eaten—and, surprisingly, enjoyed—their guests left, Joanna disappeared to bed, and Reid found Sullivan leaning against the rail at the bow.

Sullivan quietly surveyed the stars. His coat was zipped to the base of his throat and his jeans were scrunched around his deck boots.

A smooth breeze funneled down Reid’s shirt sleeves, but the shiver came deeper than that. Cinnamon from Sullivan’s apple pie stuck to Reid’s clothes and the lip he nervously chewed on. Since their moment at the parade, they’d not been alone together.

Sullivan had cast him furrowed looks across the dining table as Reid pathetically tried to flirt. With Mason.

The outside light was on and the stainless-steel surface of the cockpit door reflected Reid. “Ugh!”

He matted down his horrendous hair.

Sullivan glanced at him. “Still not used to it?”

“I keep wetting it to keep it bearable, but it goes right ahead and dries.”

“Tough life.”

Reid leaned against the opposite rail and checked for his whistle. Still there. “The toughest. I’ve seen purple look hot on guys, but not on me. How will I ever score a date now?”

“You were doing perfectly fine today.”

“Oh, so you thought the line you’re so clingy you’ll put saran wrap out of business was a winner?”

“Mason did look slightly offended.” Sullivan’s smile widened. “Might be why I liked it so much.”

“You really don’t like him, huh?”

“Your observational skills are improving.”

“Joanna will have a first boyfriend sometime.”

“It’s too soon.”

“It’ll always be too soon.” An awkward beat passed between them. Reid stuffed his hands into his pockets and pulled them out again to grip the rail. “How’d it go with Alanis? You two were talking a lot before she raced off to her other Thanksgiving meetup.”

“Talking, Reid.” Sullivan rubbed his jaw. “I am not interested in Alanis.”

Reid jerked, surprised. Relieved. “You’re not?”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Sullivan met his eye and sighed deeply. “Look, I want to tell you the truth. Everything. I feel bad about not being more transparent. But every time I try to tell you, I think of the worst that can happen, and stall. Turns out I’m a big bloody coward. I’m sorry.”

“The worst that can happen?”

“The decision to date—to fall in love—feels like life-or-death. I died once, when Riley did. I don’t want to again.”

Reid’s chest wrenched. “I’m sorry if I’ve been pushy. You don’t have to tell me anything about who you like.”

Sullivan joined Reid at his rail. Reid dropped his hands to his sides, and warm fingers hooked around his wrist below his nausea bracelet. “Is this working for you?”

“Never take it off,” Reid murmured. “I love the tightness of it. Makes me feel safe.”

“Good.” Sullivan looked at him. “I want you to feel safe.”

Yep, okay. Reid was definitely tearing up. He forced a croaky laugh. “Are you telling me you’ll never throw me overboard?”

“I’m telling you that afterward, I’d dive in shark-infested waters to get you back.”

A tear dampened Reid’s lashes. He twisted his body and faced Sullivan. “Do you remember our trip to the cave?”

“Daily.”

Reid’s breath caught.
