After her early start, Giada left school mid-morning. Trudging home, she was still brooding on the unfairness of her mission. When she got home she slumped down on the sofa, kicking her legs in front of her and letting her head flop backwards onto the cushions.

Roberto came out of his room and watched her with his doe-like brown eyes. “How was your morning?”

“Eurgh!” Giada slumped down further as she covered her hands with her face.

“That bad, huh?”

She sat up straighter. “I’ve been given my mission. I can’t talk about it but it’s way harder than everyone else’s.”

“How do you know it’s way harder than everyone else’s?”

“It has to be - my task is impossible. I don’t know how they expect anyone to be able to complete it.” She threw her arms up into the air in exasperation.

Roberto padded over and sat next to her. His little legs dangled over the edge without touching the floor. “God never puts challenges in our path that he doesn’t know we’re strong enough to achieve. If the archangels have given you this mission, it’s because they know you can do it.”

“That’s sort of what Gabi said but it’s just… I don’t really believe her.”

Roberto looked at her. “You don’t have faith in yourself. That’s your biggest problem. The archangels believe in you. God believes in you. Now you have to believe in yourself.”

Giada looked at him and felt herself soften as his words soothed her jagged mood. She’d got used to his ways by now, but she still found it strange sometimes, hearing such wisdom coming out of the mouth of a young boy. His voice had the tone of a child, but his thoughts had the depth and profundity of a Zen Buddhist monk - not that she’d ever met a Zen Buddhist monk but if she did, Roberto is how she imagined one would sound.

“Thanks, little brother. You always make me feel better.”

“You’re welcome big sister.” He reached forward and hugged her, and Giada felt all her cares momentarily melt away.

Then he looked at her and his eyes widened with excitement. “Hey, I’m going back out to check on the kittens. Wanna come?”

Giada shook her head, “Some other time, I need to be alone for a while.”

Roberto nodded and skipped off. He’d gone from ageless sage to little kid again.
