I blinked at him. “You would?”

The professor inclined his head. “Quite right. I have never been able to examine a fresh rediit, and would like some of my suspicions confirmed about the link between master and slave.”

“Injuring them, even to try to cure them, would anger their families,” Asher warned him.

Cosimos sighed, but there was a hint of a smile on his lips. “Perhaps another time, then.”

I looked past our companion and at the alley out of which he had emerged. “Have you been standing in there since we left?”

“Yes,” Cosimos confirmed as he half-turned to the darkness. “I had overheard the noise in the alley and sought a certain object.”

“Object?” Asher repeated.

Cosimos dug into his coat and drew out a curved piece of nail about the length of one of my fingers. “Our fox friend dropped this in his attempt to climb into your window.”

“You might be a little off on how he tried to get in,” I mused as my eyes traveled up the wall of the inn. “Our fluffy friend can fly.”

Cosimos’s eyes widened a little before he turned to Asher. “Is this true?”

Asher nodded. “It is, though if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I might not have believed it.”

Cosimos cupped his chin in one hand and furrowed his brow. “I see. What an interesting array of abilities. Speech, flight-”

“And he grew big enough to be rode by someone,” I added.

Rather than the shock I expected, I noticed a glint of an inexplicable eagerness. “Truly? What an amazing animal. Do you expect to see it again?”

I shrugged. “He said we’d meet again.”

“Then perhaps we should rest ere that day be tomorrow,” the professor suggested as he raised his eyes to the dark sky. “There may be much to do. . .”

Asher eyed our companion with a sharp look. “Such as?”

Cosimos shook himself and gave us an enigmatic smile. “Why, to find Meander and warn her about the dangers. I am sure you have already guessed who created the rediit who attacked you. They will bring nothing more but trouble, especially if we do not act quickly to find the goddess. Now then-” He turned away and faced the inn door. “Let us to bed.” Without waiting for a reply he hurried into the building.

I looked up at Asher who’s own face reflected my own curiosity, but with a hint more of suspicion. “I think he’s hiding more than just illness.”

Asher nodded. “Yes, and I believe we have both come to the conclusion that it isn’t to make amends for his family’s past mistakes.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What do you think it is?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know, but we should remain vigilant in case his plans should hinder ours.”

I winced. “Remain vigilant even around our friends?”

Asher wrapped his arm around me and sighed. Even in the dim light he looked old and tired. “The hour is late. Perhaps we should get to bed.” I didn’t argue, and soon we had settled down for some sleep.
