“Girl, you got a date with Red Velvet tonight? That’s what I’m talking about!”

I rolled my eyes at Keisha’s nickname for Ethan as I stuck my fork into the Caesar salad she’d brought me for lunch. We sat in my office across from each other with salads on our laps, surrounded by catalogs and stacks of invoices and receipts.

Keisha’s visit was a pleasant diversion from the planning of Caleb and Kimberly’s wedding. So far I’d scheduled a walk-through of the venue for the next day, a tasting with a caterer specializing in delicate hors d’ouvres and upscale French food, and an appointment with a florist whose creations were sure to produce a sense of fairytale bliss.

I was exhausted, emotionally drained and no closer to untangling my feelings than I had been this morning.

“So, last night…” she trailed off, her eyes shooting back down to her salad. While Keisha was blunt, she knew how sensitive a subject Caleb was for me. “Are you okay girl?”

I shrugged and picked at my salad, stabbing at a crouton with unnecessary force. “I don’t know Keisha, I really can’t tell you how I feel. I mean, I want Caleb to be happy. You know that.”

She nodded. “Sure you do.”

“But you know how I feel about him. I mean, I’ve loved him my whole life. I’ve been waiting for him to wake up and see me as a woman who loves him, not some little sister who needs protecting. I don’t know, maybe I’ve been deluding myself.”

Keisha took a sip of her iced tea. “I don’t think you’re being delusional. Really, Tammy and I have always thought you’d end up together. So have most of our friends. You guys just seem to go together, you know? Like ice cream and cake.”

“That’s what I thought, but now there’s Kimberly.”

“The little bitch.”

I laughed, knowing that Keisha didn’t really think ill of Kimberly. She was just trying to make me feel better.

“Really, though? She’s not, and I think that’s the hardest part of this whole thing. It would be so much easier if she weren’t so darn likeable. Instead, she treats me like we’ve been friends our whole lives; like she loves me because we both love Caleb. The girl hasn’t a mean bone in her body.”

“And he really does seem to love her. What are you going to do?”

“What can I do? Aside from breaking up a wedding to win the heart of a man who’s too clueless to see how I feel about him, what is there to do?”

“Crash a wedding?” Keisha smiled. “I’m down!”

I slapped her knee playfully and shook my head. “You’re a mess Keisha.”

“Just letting you know I have your back. Meanwhile, enjoy Red Velvet. I’ve got a feeling he can make you forget all about Caleb.”

“Yeah, but isn’t that kind of wrong? Won’t I be using him?”

Keisha’s smile turned mischievous. “Girl, you know what I always say. The best way to get over an old man is to get under a new one.”

I pinched my lips together to keep from spilling the details of last night.
