Chapter 19

Galak

I’m not unconscious for long. When I come to my senses, I’m on the floor with Emerie lying next to me. Pushing onto my side, I stare down at her furrowed brow. Even in sleep she’s in pain and it completely guts me.

Not since the invasion of my tribe have I felt so inadequate. Being unable to protect her, keep her from harm, it’s ingrained inside of me. But everything about this place works against me and my ability to keep her from suffering.

“I’m sorry.” The words are a whisper. My hands brush over her smooth, silky strands of hair in an attempt to bring her some comfort. What use am I to her if I can’t protect her from the horrors of this place?

My body aches from sustaining so many shocks but I struggle to my feet anyway, determined to make Emerie comfortable on the bed. As soon as I lift her limp body, she startles awake, her hand gripping my chest. “I’ve got you,” I say. She immediately relaxes in my arms. The only thought in my head is that I don’t deserve her trust. Not when I’ve failed her again.

I lie with her on the bed, tucked against my side. Time passes but eventually she’s able to lift her head and give me her focus.

“Are you okay?” Her voice is weak. Unprepared for the intense agony that grips my insides at seeing her so broken, I pull her to my chest, unable to look into her gorgeous eyes swimming with tears.

“Do not worry about me. How are you feeling?”

“Ugh.” The simple sound almost makes me smile. My female is so strong…a true survivor. “I’ve never felt anything quite like that. It’s like I was burning from the inside out. We’re going to need to increase our efforts because there’s no way I want to endure that again.”

“Arlal was punishing you because you aren’t with child?”

“He wasn’t happy about it. But he told me what to expect from the fertility serum.” She rubs her hand over my chest as if she’s trying to bring me comfort. “Are you okay? You seem so tense. I hate it when they shock you.” Her voice breaks off with a hitch, and I’m left wondering again how I’m so lucky to have this woman in my arms.

“I should’ve had more control so you wouldn’t have to witness my punishment. Arlal told me how you were crying for me, saying my name over and over again while you suffered. I was beyond the point of controlling my emotions when I finally saw you so helpless on the floor.”

She tightens her arm around my waist, nuzzling into my side.

“I’m just glad you’re here with me now. Keeping you from me was my punishment, not the serum.”

If only she knew what a mess I was when they took her away from the cell. I couldn’t sleep. Instead, I paced like a caged animal, impatient and ready to burn the entire place to ashes if they didn’t return her to me.
