CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Trez—

A cool breeze blows over me, and I crack an eye open. The sliders to the deck are open a few inches, and beyond I see Isabella standing at the railing watching the morning sun climb over the mountains.

I swing my legs over and sit, yawning. I slept on the couch last night, giving her the bed, wanting her to feel safe with no pressure from me.

I throw a tee shirt on and move to the coffeepot. I make two mugs and bring her one. She turns when I approach, and I hold out the steaming mug.

“Coffee?”

“Thank you.” She takes a sip and sets it down on the railing next to a glass of water. She has her hand cupped, and in the palm, I see a pill. She puts it in her mouth and swallows some of the water.

“Antibiotic for your wounds?” I ask.

She nods. “The doctor also said they’d cure most anything that… well, if Bonner gave me something.”

“I see. You told him?”

“He wanted to make sure I was okay. I told him what happened to me.”

“He wants you to see another doctor. The club has one. I’ll make arrangements to take you.”

She nods.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You sleep okay?”

“Yes. You have a wonderful bed.”

I grin. “Thanks.”

“I feel bad for putting you out of it.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I do. I worry about things like that.”

“You should worry less about other people and more about yourself, sweetheart.”

“You’re not the first person to tell me that, actually.”

“Oh, yeah? Who else?”

“My father.”

Her words remind me. “You need to make any calls? Let anyone know where you are? You’ve been missing for… how long?”

“Three months and eighteen days.”

The horror of her situation is driven home by just how carefully she kept track, like a prisoner of war marking the days, scratching them into the wall of her prison. “Isabella. Look at me.”

She does, and her eyes glaze over.

“It was worse than you let on, wasn’t it?”

She nods, and the tears spill over. I want to take her in my arms, but I’m suddenly afraid I’ll scare her.

“Baby, come here.” I open my arms and give her the choice. She doesn’t hesitate, burrowing her face against my chest. I enfold her in my arms, rubbing her back and cradling her head. “It’s over. You’re safe here. No one will touch you. Not even me. I promise.” I continue to hold her until long after our coffee goes cold.
