After a leisurely dinner, we take the tube homewards bound. I expect Spence to suggest we get off at his station so we can conclude a great evening with hot sex, but instead, we both get off at my station, and he walks me to my door, holding my hand the whole time.

“I had a really good time,” I say. “I’m sorry I can’t invite you in for…” My voice trails off. If Spence wanted sex tonight, we wouldn’t be standing here right now.

He leans in to kiss me, the tender action driving the doubts that were stinging my insides away.

“I had fun spoiling you,” he says, smiling at me. “Will you go on another date with me?”

“Yes.” I don’t need to think about my answer. I had a great time, and I’m eager to see Spence again.

“I’m back on day shifts from Thursday morning.” He winces. “I’m sorry. My shift patterns will make it awkward to see each other.”

“That’s okay. Having to find someone to watch Lexi isn’t always easy, especially while my brothers are both loved up.”

Spence chuckles. “Ah, yes, I officially met Archie last night.”

“He said.”

“I was amazed by how alike you look.”

I laugh. “I did tell you we were triplets.”

“Is it just you and Archie who look alike?”

I frown. “No, we all do.”

“That’s very rare.”

“It is?”

“Yes. I’d have to look up the exact probability, but it’s around a one-in-sixty-thousand chance that a pregnancy will result in identical triplets.”

I stare at him, eyes wide, eyebrows raised. “Wow.”

“The perils of dating a doctor,” Spence says. “I’ll tell you all kinds of useless medical information that you probably didn’t need or want to know.”

I shake my head. “No, that’s fascinating. I didn’t realise we were so… special.” That knowledge makes me value my brothers even more than I already did.

“I can tell you how a pregnancy can result in identical triplets if you want.”

I nod.

“The fertilised egg needs to split in two, and then one half of the split egg needs to split in two again.”

“I think my head’s going to explode.”

Spence grins. “I’ll lay off the science for tonight, sweet boy.”

“It’s time to say goodnight, isn’t it?”

“I’m afraid so.”

I glance at my door, wondering if I dare break the rule I set about not bringing hook-ups home. Spence isn’t my hook-up. He’s my date. I let Blake have Gabe and Calvin over. My shoulders slump. There was a strictly no-fooling-around rule, which Blake stuck to as far as I know. If I invite Spence in, I’d want to take him to my room and touch and kiss him all over. I’d want to feel him inside me.

“Goodnight,” I say softly.

He kisses my cheek. “Goodnight, sweet boy. I’ll see you again soon?”

But not tomorrow after work, for quick, meaningless sex.

“Soon,” I echo.

I watch him walk away down the street, and then head inside.

“Good date?” Archie asks, making me jump out of my skin.

“Fucking hell, Archie!” I hiss. I don’t want to wake Lexi.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
