âHey, donât run off, you need to stick with us,â Dwight yelled. He grabbed Ninaâs hand and hurried after his nephews. They were going to be the death of him. They had been running from one site to the next since they walked into the entry gates of the Fall Festival. He slowed as the boys stopped to see a demonstration of a cow milking.
âUncle D, you should buy a cow so The Maple Pit can serve fresh milk,â Preston said, a look of awe on his face.
He forced his lips into a smile and nodded. No way was he getting up early to milk a cow. He looked down at Nina as she watched the demonstration. Suddenly, he was aware he was still holding her hand. Should he let go? She didnât seem to object.
âUncle D, can we go on that slide?â Philip asked, pointing to a slide formed on the side of a hill.
He hated slides. No grown man was supposed to go down something like that. There was no way to look manly. âSure, Philip. Iâll take pictures of you.â
âNo! You have to go on it with us.â
He turned to Nina with a panicked look on his face.
She laughed and let go of his hand. She held it out to Philip. âIâll go with you.â
âAwesome!â He turned around and stuck his tongue out at Preston. âYou have to go by yourself.â He shouted in a sing-song voice.
He watched as Nina raced Philip up the hill. The woman was amazing. It was obvious she loved kids. He had found out too late that Nicole faked her excitement around children. He turned to Preston. Heâd almost forgot he was there. âYou didnât want to go slide, buddy?â
âNah, it makes me sick.â
He grimaced. He forgot how sensitive the boyâs stomach was. âHow about we go get some cotton candy while we wait?â
Prestonâs eyes lit up and for a moment, he saw his late brother-in-lawâs face staring back at him. How did Delaney handle the loss with the constant reminder?
âThat sounds great, Uncle D.â
By the time they got their treat, Philip and Nina were at the top of the slide, prepared to slide down on the burlap bag. He watched as they slid down, hands in the air. He clicked the camera button on his iPhone and sent the pictures to Delaney. Maybe if she saw how much fun Nina had with the boys, sheâd warm up to her.
He knew his family was just trying to get him to think rationally, but he had spent countless hours praying to God about this relationship. Every night he asked for a sign that he was on the right path. That considering marriage with Nina was a part of Godâs will.
Every time his mother or sister slammed the brakes, he instinctively defended Nina. Was that a sign that they could work as a couple or that he shouldnât be with her? Didnât the opinion of family matter? He ran a hand down his face.
âYou okay, Uncle D?â
He looked down at his nephew and ruffled his curls.
