We crept through the dark woods slowly and quietly.

I’d be an idiot to think that Izod hadn’t immediately shot himself up with a full dose of serum the moment he robbed me of my stash, so I had to maintain an awareness that he would hear us coming and be able to react with similar reflexes to my own.

And even though Teeva was a Theta and could sense ground vibrations, smells and sounds that most people couldn’t, she was also without her normal twelve pints of blood and probably close to passing out. She moved slowly, and that’s when I realized she had no shoes. She was traipsing across the earth in bare feet.

Izod was dead. I would make sure of it now.

“Wait,” she breathed, grabbing me by the shoulder to get me to stop. “I feel two heartbeats.”

We crouched down behind a mother log and remained silent.

The crack of twigs beneath feet and heavier breathing drew nearer.

Two men walked past us. One held a gun to the other’s head. To Tozer’s head.

The man with the gun was Izod.

“Why wouldn’t he just kill Tozer?” I asked, though I more mouthed the words right next to Teeva’s ear than actually said anything out loud, but I knew she heard me.

“He needs a way into the bunker, and Tozer will get it for him,” she replied, pressing her finger to her lips to tell me to be quiet again.

Tozer and Izod walked right past us, neither of them aware of our presence.

“What are we going to do?” she asked. “We need to get down to the bunker before Izod to warn people. The four Amlins are already down there.”

“They’ll be under surveillance,” I said, knowing protocol and how, without being vetted, Haina and Tozer wouldn’t have allowed the Amlins that arrived in such an unorthodox manner to be given free rein of the bunker. At least not until they spoke with the guy who had the gaping wound in his abdomen. Unless that guy didn’t make it.

“The man with the serious injury. What’s his deal?”

Her eyes turned hard. “He’s horrible. I really hope he didn’t make it. He always takes way more blood from me than he needs, then gets really violent and angry when he’s high. I’ve seen him rip out people’s jugulars with his teeth like some vampire or something when he’s going through withdrawal and we come across someone with the Strat. I feel like it’s only a matter of time until he turns on Wuna or me.”

“Let’s hope Tozer wasn’t able to save him, then.”

She nodded and once we knew we were far enough behind Tozer and Izod; we stepped out from the cover of the mother log and followed them. I allowed Teeva to lead, since she had an uncanny ability to know exactly where to step that wouldn’t make any sound. Or maybe she was just avoiding stepping on anything that would hurt the bottoms of her feet. Either way, we caught up to Tozer and Izod pretty quickly.
