16 - Lachlan

“I could stay like this forever.”

“Forever is a long time.” Veronica purred.

“You are right. Make that, forever and a day.”

I reclined against her body and reveled in the feel of her breasts molded to my back. My hips and thighs cradled by hers. I prided myself on being the protector, but in that moment, the embrace of her body became my safe place. She gave me peace. Like I found a piece of myself I didn’t know was missing. A blissful feeling, and a dangerous one.

The water rippled when Veronica moved her arms underneath mine and encircled my chest. Her fingers moved across my stomach, lower to my belly and came to a rest over my navel. A subtle shift of her emotions poked at my psyche when she pressed her fingers flat over the spot where Delilah fed.

“We can’t stay in a bathtub forever.”

“Give me one good reason why not?”

“I’ll give you two. We are starting to prune.”

She used her left hand to raise my left hand from where it rested on her knee to eye level, so I could see the budding wrinkles in my fingertips.

I gently rubbed the side of my head along her jaw. “Pruning is not a good reason.”

“The water is turning cold.”

“I can fix that.”

I breathed deeply and angled my head for a clear line to the water. Delicious heat rose from my chest, traveled up my throat and left my open lips in an exhale of hot blueish-green flames. It took only a handful of seconds for steam to waft up from the water. Veronica pressed against the wall of the tub almost as soon as the flames left my mouth.

“You couldn’t warn me?”

She tried to vacate the tub, but the weight of my body pinned her.

“Fire does not hurt you anymore.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I am a fire drake and you are my rider. Not only does fire no longer harm you, but you may learn to control it, manipulate it, and shape it.”

She scoffed. “No offense, but I’ll believe that when I see it.”

“Do you trust me?” I asked.

“What are you going to do?”

“Do you trust me?” I repeated softly.

“Yes.”

Her answer followed several moments of hesitation, but it was enough. I interlocked the fingers of our left hands and raised them. Her body tensed as the heat built in my chest again.

“Lachlan?”

She gasped as yellow and orange flames left my lips and engulfed our hands. Her body convulsed with the expectation of pain that never arrived.

“How?”

“All riders adapt to the element of their dragons. How else can they properly ride them into battle?”

“So, the rider of a sea dragon?”

I chuckled and pressed her hand I tested my flames on, between my palms, “Would never worry about drowning.”

“Huh. Now that would have come in handy.”

“Cheeky.”

I tickled her knees as punishment and stole a kiss once she laughed. I snaked a hand behind her head and kept her trapped while my tongue invaded her mouth. I would never tire of kissing her, of touching her lips and tasting her mouth.
