Chapter 9

Sneaux

Isat on my sofa rubbing my temples.

My dad was on his way so we could have this talk. No matter what, he wasn’t going to make me feel bad. That’s what I kept repeating in my head. I was a daddy’s girl at heart though, even at my big age. He could probably say something upsetting to me and I might just break down and cry like a baby. I was not looking forward to this conversation.

When my doorbell sounded off, I jumped to my feet, wiped my sweaty palms down the sides of my jeans, and ambled to the front door.

“Hey Dad,” I smiled, walking into his body so he could wrap his arms around me. He did and dropped a kiss on the top of my head.

“Hey, Sneaux.”

I stepped back to allow him to walk in and then I shut and locked the door. After taking deep breaths and exhaling, I spun on my heels to join him in my living room. I knew my dad wasn’t happy about me being pregnant. It wasn’t like I didn’t want to be a mother one day because I did. It was happening just a little earlier than expected and without a husband.

My dad cleared his throat as I sat down across from him with a foot tucked underneath me.

“How did you and him meet?” was the first question he threw out.

I glanced down at my hands in my lap and then back up at him.

“It’s embarrassing to explain,” I mumbled out. “During the storm, Kasim um…he um…”

“He what, Sneaux?” he asked.

“He needed shelter from the snow and I um…allowed him to come inside my house. Things happened a little fast and we ended up…”

My dad lifted his hand and huffed, “Save me the details. Let me get this straight…You don’t know this boy and you had sex with him unprotected. I know your mother wasn’t here to talk about the birds and the bees with you, Sneaux, but I thought I did a good job at it.”

“Dad, stop. I’m grown and I knew what I was doing. I didn’t think I’d end up pregnant, but I am. Can’t go back in time to change it either,” I expressed.

He snorted.

“Kasim will be at my doctor’s appointment tomorrow and he will be in our child’s life. He has a son that he is very active with…”

“And is he with his son’s mother? How do you know he didn’t cheat with you, Sneaux? Why would you bring these problems to yourself?” my dad fussed. He stood and began pacing my living room, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“They aren’t together, Dad.”

“And you think he’s going to be with you?” he asked.

I shrugged.

“I’m not expecting him to. I don’t want to be with someone who is just with me for the baby’s sake. I still want love,” I admitted.

He plopped down on the sectional and put his head in his hands. Momentarily, he peered over at me.

“I’m going to always be here for you, Sneaux.
