Sister Chan Khong
FOR MORE THAN half a century, Sister Chan Khong has been working closely with the world-renowned Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, and she is recognized as being a major force in helping him to grow his community. But Chan Khong is an accomplished teacher in her own right, and it can even be said that her life itself is a teaching.
She was born in 1938 in a Vietnamese village on the Mekong River Delta, a land that was lush with rice fields and coconut groves yet also riddled with poverty and strife. To satisfy her parents, she studied biology, completing her degree at the University of Paris, but she always knew it was to social action that she wished to dedicate her life. At age twenty-one, she joined Nhat Hanh in establishing the School of Youth for Social Service, an organization that culminated in ten thousand young people developing medical, educational, and agricultural facilities in rural Vietnam and rebuilding villages decimated by war. She then went on to work tirelessly on behalf of the “boat people” who fled her homeland in the 1970s and 80s.
In “Learning True Love,” Chan Khong takes readers deep into wartorn Vietnam by recounting the dangers she faced as a young woman coming to the aid of flood victims. Then, in “Deep Relaxation,” she teaches a practice by that name—a highly nurturing meditation for which she has become well known in her community. Based on the idea that body and mind support each other, it involves releasing the stress in the body so as to also release the stress in the mind.
