Chapter 18

Luke

When Luke awoke the next morning, his heart was still light. He rested on his back and gazed up at the ceiling. After a few minutes of daydreaming and reflecting on the date the day before, less pleasant things snuck into his mind. He'd have to get up and keep working on finding an apartment, which was always annoying.

Oh, and he had to face his parents. He had run out on them when Brody had picked him up the day before. They were probably worried about him. He needed Brody to join him so that they could tell the whole story together.

Maybe that'd be the next thing to do together. It would make things so much easier between them.

Would Brody be ready to come out to his parents? Or would it be better for Brody to come out to his own parents first?

He groaned and rubbed his face, easing out of bed and getting ready for the day. Once he made his way downstairs, he found both of his parents sharing breakfast in the kitchen.

Luke winced and cleared his throat. “Hey, good morning.”

“Good morning!” Linda greeted as she rose from the table. “I have a plate warming in the oven for you.”

“Thanks,” Luke murmured as he moved to join Jerry at the table. He had the morning paper like usual, although the news on the pages visible to Luke wasn't that interesting.

Once Linda returned with the plate of food and set it before him, the three fell quiet and ate their breakfast.

God, it was awkward.

“So, you were out with Brody last night...?” Linda said after a minute or two.

“I was, yeah.”

“You two are friends again?”

“We're trying to be, like I said,” Luke responded. “We've been catching up. He showed me around. I mean, I know the city but he's been here longer than me now. There were some cool additions I didn't know about.”

Luke was rambling out of nerves but he couldn't stop himself.

“You look like you're smitten again,” Linda warned.

“I... I am a bit,” Luke admitted, his cheeks warm. “But I can't do the closet thing again. I want him to come talk with you guys to finally get everything out into the open. Anyway, I can't stay long. I'm looking for an apartment.” Luke stuffed the last slice of toast into his mouth and rose from the table.

“You know you'll always have a home here,” Linda said.

“Of course, Mom. I know that. I just want space for my own, too. I want to be here awhile.”

“You're... not going to move back to Philadelphia when your dad gets a job?”

Luke's eyes widened as he snapped his head between them, then focused on his father. “Of course not! I'm here to help you guys out, yeah, but I also want to make a new life here. Will I go back to the city? Someday, maybe, but right now, my home is here.”

Both Linda and Jerry visibly relaxed at the words. Luke moved forward and hugged them both in turn. “Sorry if you guys were worried about that.
