Chapter Fifteen

The three of us rushed back to the coven. I ran in the middle. I hated needing protection, but if I complained, they’d team up on me, so I kept my mouth shut.

Soon, we heard wolves running our way. I linked with the others, and my body stiffened. Crap, there are more coming.

No, it’s us, Gabby replied. You seemed to be in trouble.

She actually sounded worried. At least it showed they were coming around, albeit slowly. We’re good. Just rushing back to the coven.

Speak for yourself, Beth complained. My side hurts from how that bitch witch threw me.

Bitch would’ve worked, Ada interjected.

I liked how it rhymed, Beth grumbled. Leave the injured person alone.

Guys, we need to focus, Aidan said briskly. In only a few hours, The Hallowed Guild is going to attack us.

Leave them alone. We’d all gone through so much shit. They need time to decompress. No one is attacking us yet, so let them blow off some steam.

You’re right. He huffed beside me. It’s just I could’ve lost you again. I couldn’t get to you, and it hurt to know that there was nothing I could do.

If I’d seen him in a similar situation, I’d have felt the same way. To watch someone you love get caught couldn’t be easy. But nothing happened, and I’m here with you.

Aidan bared his teeth and increased his speed. That doesn’t make it better. We got lucky again. One day, our luck might run out.

We ran down a hill and found Gabby, Logan, Sunny, and Honor waiting at the bottom. They turned back in the direction they’d come from and ran slower, waiting for us to catch up.

Extra back-up wouldn’t hurt. Logan flanked Beth while Gabby flanked Aidan.

Agreed. Aidan sounded relieved.

For the next several minutes, the only sounds we heard were the pounding of our paws and animals scurrying.

They’re clearing out, Logan said with concern. That’s what happened after my father was killed and the new alpha took over.

Wait … your father was the alpha? He’d known about The Hallowed Guild when we’d found him, but he’d kept silent about his past and his knowledge. Remus and Aidan normally led the charge on knowledge.

Yeah, he was until the current alpha murdered him. Agony wafted off from Logan. I was only five years old, and the coward snuck in and severely injured Dad before challenging him. He knew I was the alpha heir since the eldest was a girl; my sister was eight, so he acted before I could beat him. When I became stronger, he wed my sister and used her as leverage over me. He gave me this scar right before he rejected me and pushed me away.

And it worked. No wonder he was so angry. I’d be lashing out at everyone too. The Hallowed Guild had done so many wrongs.

When I attacked him for beating her, he had one of his betas bring her out with a noose around her neck. His voice cracked. They told me to leave or they’d kill her.
