When Uncle Rodney called, inviting the family over for some barbecue, I was more than ready. Between him and my dad, those fellas had grilling down to a science. Mama and Zyon made a few desserts while Aunt Shan handled the sides. We could hear the music blasting as we pulled into the driveway. Since they lived in a rural area not far from Reese and Keon, the closest neighbors were a mile up the street. You could smell the food in the air and my stomach was touching my back. The breakfast I’d eaten earlier was gone.

Not only was I happy to spend time with my people, but I was also ready to lay eyes on Lyric. Other than checking her social media daily, I hadn’t seen her in a while. She made it clear about not being ready for a relationship so I had no choice but to respect that. That didn’t mean I had to like it. After talking with my pops, Keon, and the fellas, I realized what she meant. Lyric wanted to establish herself before getting into anything serious.

I wanted nothing more than to see her win so I would be there as a friend if I couldn’t be anything more at the moment. She needed to know that I respected and valued her.

While she had been on my mind, my ex had me on hers. Sasha had been messaging me on every app she could, trying to talk to me, but I had nothing for her ass. Soon as I got injured, she flaked on me so there was no need for us to speak about anything. Her number was blocked, resulting in her calling me from different numbers begging for a conversation.

Yeah, that wasn’t happening. She had her chance and fucked it up. From what I heard, the ex-teammate she left me for had been let go from his current team due to misconduct and failing his drug test. I knew what she wanted, but she wouldn’t be getting anything from me, period. That nigga had the nerve to brag about taking her from me when his baby mama was in my inbox, constantly shooting her shot. He really thought bagging Sasha was a win, but the joke was on both of them.

Just thinking about them put a bad taste in my mouth, but seeing Lyric strut around in her t-shirt dress with those thick thighs and legs out made everything better.

As if she could sense me, she turned in my direction, stopping when she realized it was me staring. Before I could approach her, she disappeared like there was fire under her feet once again.

Damn, did I make lil’ baby that nervous?

After helping Mama and Zyon bring the food inside, I went outside to find Keon. He was standing by my dad, G’s dad, and Uncle Rodney drinking a Corona. I already knew what type of day this was about to be. I loved how all of our families had been friends for years, starting with our parents.
