And I was always insecure, just until I foundâ¦
Words often donât come easy, I never learned, to show the inside of me, oh no my baby
You were always patient. Dragging out what I tried to hide
I was always on the run. Finding out, what I was looking for
And I was always insecure. Until I foundâ¦
You, you were always on my mind
You, youâre the one Iâm living for
You, youâre my everlasting fire
Youâre my always shining star
CHAPTER 7
âNatasha. Sit down will you? In here. In the lounge.â
Natasha was about to say that she was washing up, but she saw that Helenâs face was serious and she began drying her hands.
âWhat is it, Helen?â Natasha walked into the lounge.
âCome and sit here.â Helen indicated the arm chair and Natasha sat in it. Helen sat opposite her on the sofa.
âIâve been having a long think and Iâve decided Iâm going to join you.â
Natasha looked confused. âJoin me in what?â
âOn the wagon. Iâm going to quit the booze. Completely. Finito!â
âWell,â said Natasha raising her eyebrows. âI donât know what to say! Thatâs wonderful. What made you decide?â
âIf you canât beat them, join them. Isnât that what they say? I know it means a lot to you so Iâm going to do it.â
Natasha crossed the room and hugged Helen tightly. âThank you,â she said simply.
âEr, there is just one little condition,â Helen said, her voice low and her face fixed. Natasha couldnât read her expression. A pause followed. None of them spoke. Helen sat back down.
âI want you to have a last farewell drink with me tonight,â Helen announced at last.
âOh Helen, you canât ask me to do that. Iâve got several months under my beltâ¦â Natasha was distraught and flabbergasted.
âHear me out,â interrupted Helen holding up her hand. âIâve had to drink on my own for a long time now. Itâs not been any fun, Natasha. I donât mind giving your new healthy lifestyle a go but I want us to have a night to remember before I do.â
âYou can have a night to remember without me drinking too. We can still have a great night. Sit in the garden. Light the barbecue. Itâll be just the same without me breaking my sobriety.â
âOh listen to you. âBreaking my sobriety!â Anyone would think there was a prize for being dry the longest! No oneâs keeping a record of how saintly you are being, Natasha.â
âThe prize is my new life. My happiness. Donât you want that for me too?â
âWe can start it afresh together. You can advise me now youâve had a bit of practise. We can have the same sobriety date. Just give me this last party night. Weâll do all you said. Have one big last session in the garden and totter off to bed when the moon is out. Weâll toast our new life that starts tomorrow.â
âWe havenât even got any beer in the house.â Natasha knew she was weakening. She knew she had given in already.
âBoot of my car!â Helen said proudly. âEight cans of your favourite beer.
