Around lunch, I call my father and tell him Miranda and I would like to meet him and mom that evening for dinner at Dante’s, my parents’ favorite restaurant. His voice is surprised and somewhat stilted. “I guess the date went well. I’ll let her know. What time should we be there?”

“I’ve made reservations for six-thirty,” I tell him as I ring off. I figure meeting them in a public place, their favorite place, will make it less likely for them to argue about any of the details. After all, my mother would never dream of making a scene. I wonder if dad has told her anything. If not, he’ll be singing like a canary by the time we’re done.

“What are you up to?” Dalton asks as he walks past me.

“What?” I ask, raising my hands innocently.

Dalton’s eyes narrow. “Now I know you’re up to something.”

Sometimes having a best friend means that they call you on your bullshit. I’ll have to sit on this one for a day or two before I clue him in. I need to see how tonight goes first. Besides, I’m afraid he’ll try and talk me out of it, and I’m determined to do this.

I join him in step as we go to unload the latest site haul. “I do need to ask a favor of you, though. I may need to take some time off for the rest of the week. I’ve had some things come up that I need to take care of, and I think we’re pretty much caught up on all of the big orders.”

Dalton’s look becomes even more skeptical. “Why do I suddenly feel like we’re back in high school, and you’re about to try and talk me into something that’ll get me grounded? I’m an adult, now, Jacob. Grounded means a night in jail.”

“How can you get grounded or wind up in jail for giving me time off?”

Dalton makes a face. “I don’t know how. I just know if it can happen, it will with you.”

“Then the less you know, the better,” I tell him with a smirk. As I walk away, I swear I hear him cursing.
