Chapter Seven

Now that it’s daylight and I’m not quite as nervous or tired as I was last night, I take some time to wander around the first floor of the house. Mostly, I’m learning more about my two Daddies from the kinds of knickknacks they own, the pictures on the walls, and the type of furniture they have.

Zephyr also gives me my phone so I can send a text to Petra before she starts to worry. Luckily there aren’t ten messages from her. I send mine and give it back to Zephyr.

When I come to the sliding glass doors off the kitchen and see the backyard, my eyes widen. “You have a pool.”

Zephyr chuckles. “I’m a swim coach, Little one. Water sports are my life.”

I knew that, but I hadn’t thought about him having a pool.

“There’s a pool at the house I’m renting on the island too,” Andy says. “Not to mention a water park and two developed beaches. Do you like to swim, princess?”

I automatically draw my lip in between my teeth and turn my attention back to the pool.

Zephyr steps closer and grips my chin. “Lip, baby girl.”

I drop the offended lip. “I like water. It’s pretty.”

He chuckles. “Water is pretty? That doesn’t answer Andy’s question.”

I look up at him. It’s not like I can keep the truth a secret. “I like to sit on the steps or on the sand or run through sprinklers.”

His brows narrow. “You don’t like to swim?”

My face heats. “I don’t know how.”

“Ah. That’s different. Did you not take any lessens growing up, baby girl?”

I shake my head.

Andy reaches for my messy, wild hair and plays with a lock. “You haven’t told us about your childhood, princess. How about if you tell us about your family while Daddy puts this hair in pigtails, yeah?”

I start to bite my lip but then grab one of the pacifiers and pop it in my mouth.

Andy laughs as he sweeps me off the floor again and carries me to the living room. He sits me on the footstool and then settles on the couch behind me. When he starts brushing out my hair, I close my eyes.

It feels good. I really like it when he plays with my hair.

Zephyr sits across from me, crosses his legs, and leans back. “Take the pacifier out and tell us about your childhood. Where did you grow up?”

I reluctantly remove the binky and look down at my lap, fidgeting my fingers against my thighs. I feel weird sitting here wearing nothing but a diaper and a shirt.

“I grew up in the foster system,” I tell them first.

“Oh. You never mentioned that,” Andy says, pausing for a moment before continuing to gather my hair on one side in a high pigtail.

I shrug as I drag one of my toes over the carpet.

“Did you live with a family, Little one?” Zephyr asks gently.

“No. Three.” I don’t want to talk about that part of my life. It makes me anxious. I lift my hands
