Chapter Twenty-Three

Cass

Standing at the bottom of the stairwell, Cass heaved a sigh and looked up. They both lived on the fourth floor and there were no elevators. Garrett was hovering just behind her, a silent ball of tension, just as he had been for the entire walk over from the medical center.

“I can carry you,” he stated, and she felt his hands brush against her waist.

Without a word, Cass stepped quickly out of his grasp and began marching up the stairs. As her bare feet slapped down against each step, she had to admit that the soles of her feet were sore. But as much as she’d like a free pass to the top, Cass’s mind was still processing. She was reeling from all the memories and the flood of emotions they brought on.

Now that she remembered her brother, really remembered him, it made her mourn the loss of him all that much more. Because knowing Eli, he would definitely have come to get her during the war, just like he’d promised. And because he hadn’t showed, that meant one thing… he was just what Garrett had warned her he was, Eli was dead.

Pausing at the second floor landing, Cass braced one hand against a wall and closed her eyes. Ugh, then there was that whole thing with Garrett sort of kidnapping her (that he then clearly lied about, by the way).

Had he told her he loved her just to get her on that train? Or had he meant it? And even if he had meant it at the time, that was years and years ago now. She didn’t know what to make of it. She didn’t know what to do.

“This is ridiculous,” Garrett spat, and suddenly Cass was being lifted off her feet.

“Garrett!” She warned, but by then it was too late.

In one swift motion, he flipped her around and tossed her over his shoulder before continuing up the stairs. Her hair was swinging wildly and she had to brace her palms on his lower back in order to lift her head. She was treated to a view of the steps as they continued to climb, as well as his particularly nice butt.

Firming her lips, Cass averted her gaze, or tried to… mostly.

She could fight him, she figured, if she had more energy, but what was the point of struggling? She didn’t want to pitch them both down the stairs just to make a point, and this was just so typical of him. This act right here was so unbelievably typical of Garrett. Damn him and his sexy savior complex.

When they got to the top, there wasn’t even a question as to which apartment he turned to. He didn’t ask her if she’d changed her mind, or offer to get her any of her things, even though her place was literally just across the hall. Nope. He just twisted the doorknob to his own apartment and ducked low to cross inside.

“Don’t you lock it?” She asked, he was still holding her balanced on one shoulder as he turned and closed the door behind them.
