Chapter Twenty-One

Josie lay on her side in the dark bedroom, straining to hear Curtis and Leo’s conversation.

With her hands restrained behind her back and her mouth taped shut, she had no way to announce to either of them that she needed to use the restroom.

Leo’s voice suddenly grew in volume. “This was not part of the deal, Curtis. I agreed to help you get her away from those creatures, but what you’re doing is insane. You were supposed to take her back to Washington and convince her father that she’d been taken against her will by the Bracadytes. Not abuse her and force yourself on her!”

“I haven’t forced myself on her,” Curtis snapped back. “And I’d rather it not come to that.”

“And if she doesn’t submit to you?”

Curtis remained silent for a moment. “She will if she values the life of that thing she ran off with. Did you plant the device?”

“I did.”

Josie’s heart began to pound. She knew the thing Curtis referred to was Braum. And Leo has planted a device? What kind of device?

“Good,” Curtis mumbled, leaving Josie straining to hear his next words. “She’ll do what she’s told if she wants him to live. And you’ll do what you’re told, if you want to stay out of jail. Or worse…the grave.”

“I know what I have to do,” Leo practically shouted. “Let’s just hurry up and be done with it. I’m ready to get the hell out of this place.”

Several minutes ticked by in silence with Josie fighting against her bonds to no avail. Curtis was planning on hurting Braum.

Panic, deep and fierce, gripped her insides. She had to do something to stop Curtis from this madness. If something happened to Braum, Josie would never forgive herself.

Her thoughts drifted to Naura and the unborn child she carried before settling on Arcanum’s sweet, precious face.

Screaming behind the tape covering her mouth, Josie began fighting in earnest.

The bedroom door abruptly opened. Leo strode into the room without meeting her gaze. “You’re only drawing attention to yourself. Do you really want him coming in here?”

Josie stilled, but continued making sounds behind the tape.

With a sigh of resignation, Leo stepped forward and peeled it back. “What is it?”

“What kind of device did you plant in Aukrabah?” Josie rushed out as soon as her mouth was freed.

Leo’s gaze hardened. “If I were you, I’d worry less about those damn aliens and more about what Curtis has planned for you.”

“How can you do this, Leo? What have the Bracadytes ever done to you?”

Narrowing his eyes, Leo stared down at her in disdain. “They are responsible for our nation’s pandemic. No matter what the CDC did to exacerbate the situation, none of this would be happening if not for those filthy creatures.”

Josie recoiled from the venom in his words. “You’re wrong! They’re the innocent ones in all this. If not for the humans blowing that oil well, the Bracadytes would have never been on the surface to begin with. It’s not their fault, Leo. Can’t
