Escorted off a prison-bus by two bulky correction-officers, Bo joined a line led into the ARDC 4-building on Rikers Island and placed in a large holding-cell. Shaken up by the foreign experience of being inside the notorious jail, he shadowed his fear by wearing a mean scowl. Taking a seat beside a few prisoners on a row of benches sitting adjacent another row of benches attached to a concrete wall, he observed his surroundings. The benches were filled with gang insignia revealing the presence of Latin Kings, Bloods, and Neta’s, and other rival gangs of the Bloods. Finding his set, GKB, scribbled on the concrete walls made him smirk. The graffiti solidified he was not alone. There were those of his kind present in the building.

Seven other prisoners occupied the holding-cell besides Bo, three Latino males and four blacks. The boys were all brought over from Spofford, some because they’d gotten too old to be in the juvenile joint, and some for multiple infractions as Bo.

“Shit is about to get real,” said a boy to Bo.

Bo cringed at the boy’s words. As much as he didn’t want to believe it, he knew the boy was right. Horrific tales of mayhem on Rikers Island circulated on the streets as far back as he could remember. Stories of vicious slashings, stabbings, rapes, and even murders. Bo knew quite a few persons who went to Rikers’ and returned home with grotesque wounds. Thinking of what he was about to face made his stomach turn.

“And I’m about to get real with it,” he responded, trying his hardest not to seem scared.

Sitting in the cell for close to three-hours, Bo and the rest were finally let out the cage and sent to a room where they were instructed to strip of their garments. Disrobing, Bo used his hands to cover his genitals and awaited further instructions from the officer.

“Form a line and go through the metal-detector one by one,” commanded an officer.

Leading a line through a metal-detector, Bo went through without an issue. He didn’t have anything on him so he knew the machine wouldn’t ring off. Waiting off to the side while the other prisoners finished their course through the machine, he couldn’t help but look at the muscle packed correction officers. They were nothing like the scrawny staff members at Spofford. He would have a major issue if he got into a scuffle with the Rikers Island officers.

Once it was verified no one had weapons, everyone was given a green plastic cup and instructed to get dressed. They were then brought to an infirmary.

Bo’s eyes circulated during his journey through Rikers Island. He didn’t miss a beat. Entering a waiting area filled with other prisoners, he positioned himself close to a wall to keep an eye on everyone else. Avoiding eye-contact with a man looking his way, he eventually couldn’t take it anymore. The man was staring him down too hard. He matched the man’s stare.

“Blood up, nigga!” voiced the man, causing the room to get quiet.
