CHAPTER 19

There didn’t seem to be any part of Ivy that wasn’t cold. Ketahn drew her closer against the living furnace that was his body as she shivered, and she huddled into his heat gratefully.

As much as everyone had wanted to lie down right on that branch and sleep for a week after narrowly escaping the flood, Ketahn had urged them onward. Their slow, painstaking journey across the branches had finally led them to a rocky cliffside where they’d discovered this cave about forty feet above the floodwater.

Though it wasn’t necessarily warm inside, it was dry, and Ivy was glad to be out of the rain and resting.

There was a small fire crackling, made from the debris they’d found in the cave—dried twigs and what must have been some sort of long-abandoned nest. But even that couldn’t vanquish the cold that had seeped into Ivy’s bones. All the humans had gathered around the fire with nothing more than damp blankets wrapped around them, their clothes having been cast off to dry—if anything could ever dry in this weather. The vrix sat close behind the humans, doing everything they could to generate warmth in the small space.

Despite the material of their jumpsuits being waterproof, days of travel with constant rainfall had given all that water ample opportunity to find every opening in those suits. A waterproof exterior didn’t make much difference once water got underneath.

Outside the cave, the light was dying, and the rain continued. When the vrix called it the flood season, they’d meant it—literally. Had the crater where the Somnium crashed flooded also? Ivy couldn’t imagine still being on that ship, trapped behind those doors, knowing it could be weeks or months before she’d see daylight again.

She dropped a hand to her belly. She hadn’t done so intentionally, but her thoughts had frequently been seized by a…protectiveness over what was possibly growing inside her.

No, not possibly. She knew. She knew Diego was right, knew there was a new life taking shape within her, and her desire to safeguard that little life grew with each passing moment.

Will rubbed a hand over his face. Out of the three men, he alone wasn’t growing a beard. “How much did we lose?”

“I lost my bag,” Callie said.

Cole tossed another twig into the fire. “Mine too. Had to cut it loose.”

“One fell from Ahnset,” said Ketahn, his voice rumbling into Ivy from behind. “Lost spears also.”

“We still have plenty of ration bars and hydration packets.” Lacey ran a hand through her hair, pulling it back from her face and fluffing it. “The rest of the stuff wasn’t necessities, and we would’ve lost most of it overtime anyway. It was just extra weight. We can make more clothes, blankets, and spears.”

“Yes. And we will hunt for food.”

Diego smirked. “Don’t think we’re lacking water either.”

“I am so done with water right now,” Callie muttered.

Ahmya drew her blanket tighter around her body. The fire’s orange light flickered over her features, making her cheeks look hollower. “How long will the flood last?”

Ketahn turned his head toward the mouth of the cave.
