Chapter 16

Khocin

It’s early when I leave Leah’s room, glancing back at her still, supple body lying under the covers. It takes all of my will power to walk away, but while we were busy in Direglen, the Yinean moved even further from our radar. After we attacked their research facility, some sort of retaliation is guaranteed…we just don’t know what they’re planning or when they might strike. Not that I feel at all guilty about what we did, because I don’t. Our main motivation was to rescue Galak’s mate, Emerie, but they’ve been using innocent species against their will for years in their search to expand their research. They got all they deserved and more. If only we could’ve stopped them all before they slipped through our fingers.

The hallway of our compound is quiet, but well-lit from the lighting installed into the ceiling panels. Because the command station was built into the side of a mountain, we only have access to windows on one side. The location is ideal for security reasons. By being stationed where we are, we limit where an attack can originate. Still, after everything that has happened recently, we’re spending the next few days going through complete and thorough security checks.

As I pass our meeting room, a light from inside draws my attention. It isn’t unusual for any one of my brothers to be awake at any time day or night, but I figure I might as well say hello before I head out to run a check on the borders. The aroma of brewed purece fills the room, a mug gripped tightly in Resor’s hand where he sits at the computers.

“You’re up early, Resor.” He doesn’t turn to look at me, instead leans back in his chair and cracks his head from side to side. “Or perhaps you’ve yet to go to bed?”

When he finally turns to look at me, the answer is clear. If he did sleep at all last night, it wasn’t restful.

“Sleep has eluded me as of late.” He takes a large drink of the steaming purece, the only thing giving him the energy to sit upright in his chair.

“Ever since Direglen?”

He nods almost imperceptibly, as if he’s embarrassed to admit it.

“I close my eyes and see Gemma’s face. Sometimes she cries out for me, but I wake before I can get to her. I let her down.”

“We’ll get her out of there, Resor. We need time to arrange a plan…and back-up. And it would be helpful to understand the security at the outpost.”

“That’s what I’ve been doing in here.” Resor turns back to the screen while I lean against the large table that sits in the center of the room. “I’m close to accessing their security cameras. If I can gain access without their knowledge, we’ll be able to know what we’re up against before we go back. I know the vote of our brothers wasn’t in my favor, but it’ll drive me mad if we don’t act soon.”

“I understand, Resor. It’s how I felt when I realized Leah had been taken.
