Chapter 13

TOMMY

The thunderous buzzer in my studio rudely goes off. Mikey is here and he’s early. I just got home an hour ago from walking around the city with Rico and I am beat. I’m barely done with my hot shower. I leap out of the tub, buzz Mikey up, and start drying myself quickly.

I dab some Aveda curling gel into my hair before he makes the three-story trip up to my studio.

We’re having dinner at one of his favorite restaurants, La Dolce Vita in the city’s North End. After a while, Mikey got tired of Bertucci’s and Boston Market and all the other chain places I like. I never tire of them. But hey, change is good, I always say, even though I don’t necessarily apply that to my eating habits. I mean, there is nothing wrong with eating lunch at Boston Market every day. You at least know what you get. Besides, the Brazilian server there, Celestina, always gives me extra turkey whenever I pull up. She likes to practice her Spanish with me.

Tonight marks my four-month-aversary with Mikey. It feels like yesterday that we met at Club Café. We’ve done so much in such a short time, and tonight, we’re having a special dinner. It was Mikey’s idea and I’m all for it. The only thing that can ruin this is what happens after dinner, us meeting up with Patrick and Will, whom I like to call (but never out loud) Drunk and Drunker. Mikey could easily be the third party. I’d call him “Drunkest.” Oh, what awaits me! Hopefully, things will go smoothly and not be a rerun of my birthday night. If I could just get Mikey out of Club Café sooner than later, then we’ll be okay. But ever since we’ve been together, I’ve been a failure at that and I’m just about at my breaking point.

There’s a saying I heard on The Oprah Winfrey Show that I keep in mind often. It goes something like this: If you want to know where a situation is going, look back to the beginning, because all the signs are there whether you choose to see them or not. I hate to admit this, but alcohol and Club Café were both elements from the moment we met. It’s like Corona has been a third party in our relationship and it just won’t go away.

“Hey, cutie!” Mikey greets me with a kiss and a hug as I let him in. He’s all dapper in his Abercrombie blue polo shirt and baggy blue jeans while I stand dripping in a brown towel with a mop of wet gelled hair.

“How you doin’, Tommy?”

“Oh, I’m not ready. You’re a little early, Mikey. I wasn’t expecting you for another half hour.” As happy as I am to see him, I’m also slightly annoyed that I have to rush now to get ready. But I think my annoyance stems from the fact that we are going to the CC later tonight.

I head back
