How To Know If A Medication Is Working

When you start to take medication for borderline personality disorder, this will result in both emotional and physical changes. If a medication is working well, the first thing that you may notice is a positive change in the way you respond to situations. Although the change is usually gradual and subtle, people experience the benefits of medications in a different time frame from other people. In fact, the positive changes are usually not felt unless they have been happening for some time. It is also common for other people to notice the changes in your emotional response before you do, so you may want to ask people that you are usually with if they notice any changes.

These are other indications to help you recognize when a medication is effective for you:

1. You no longer think about certain events or issues with the same frequency as before. Your pattern of thoughts is no longer inconsistent and no longer wanders from one subject to another. Although you may experience some fatigue when you begin treatment, there is a noticeable improvement on clarity and focus. It will also be easier to focus on one thought for a longer period of time.

2. Things, places, events, or people that used to be triggers no longer have the same effect on you. There will also be sudden improvements in communicating better with other people.

3. When you face situations that used to give you anxiety, you now face it with a sense of calmness. However, if you are taking benzodiazepines it is recommended to talk to your physician about this change in response.

4. Things that used to upset or anger you no longer elicits the same response.

Gender-Specific Treatment

Borderline personality disorder treatments focused on women are available to help them cope better because the way men and women manage their emotions when dealing with the illness will differ. This is why some patients prefer gender-specific treatment options. However, not all centers will have women-only treatment options available.

Each person’s BPD case is as unique as their thumbprint. The important aspect of treatment is to find qualified professionals who can design a program that will be most effective for your individual needs and who may adapt as you start to recover from the illness.

Women who have borderline personality disorder are also at higher risk for developing co-occurring disorders such as eating disorders, anxiety, suicide, and depression. If you are experiencing these, it is necessary to find treatment that will also address co-occurring disorders.
