CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Her first sensation on regaining consciousness was of pain. Then she smelled the coppery tang of blood. Next came warmth and cold on different parts of her body. And movement. Although she knew she wasn't moving her limbs, she was moving, nevertheless.

Opening her eyes, she looked around her. The agony in her shoulder had her closing her lids again almost immediately. But not before she saw that she was in Cy's arms and he was limping though the forest. Even limping he was moving faster than she could have gone at a run.

Not meaning to, she moaned in pain.

"Shay? Are you all right?" Cy's voice sounded strained.

She tried to nod but her head didn't want to obey her, so she wet her parched lips to speak. "Yeah… sort of. What happened?"

"We crashed. I tried to shield you from the worst of it, and we were lucky to be so close to the ground by that stage, but you were still damaged. You're bleeding." The last sounded like an indictment. As if she had bled intentionally.

"You're limping," she came back with an indictment of her own.

"Nothing serious. As soon as I get somewhere safe I can start repairing myself. But I need to get us as far from the crash site as possible. Lasco will send men to check on the chopper. When they find we're gone they'll come looking."

She wanted to ask more questions but the insistent pain drove them all from her mind. Instead, she let go of everything to focus on her body, controlling its reactions as best she could.

How long she stayed like that, she wasn't sure, but the sky had darkened and the trees had become less dense by the time Cy slowed to standstill.

Opening her eyes again, she was pleased to realise the effort didn't cost her as much this time. She looked around them. They were standing at the edge of a clearing. A cabin, little more than a rundown shack, stood in the centre of the space. There was no sign of habitation.

"It's deserted, isn't it?" she croaked out before clearing her throat.

"It appears to be. It's nearly dark and the temperature is dropping. I think we need to rest here. Lasco will probably not continue the search until morning. And I need to look at your injuries."

He limped more slowly into the clearing, checking out the cabin as he went. Gently, he dropped her to her feet. She held on to the side of the shack until her legs felt strong enough to support her.

"Okay?" he asked softly.

Shay nodded. Immediately, Cy climbed up onto the veranda and headed for the door. The decaying floorboards screeched under his heavy footsteps. If there had been anyone here, the noise would have attracted their attention. Knowing better, Shay cringed at the sound.

Cautiously, Cy pushed open the door and crept inside. Moments later, he was back and picking her up once more.

"The place is covered in dust. No one has been here in a very long time.
