Nick was in a destructive mood. Hell, hadn’t he been in one for his entire damned life? It felt that way. It felt like fate was keeping him alive as some sort of cosmic joke that he wasn’t in on. Or maybe it was karmic payback for a former life? He didn’t believe in that kind of stuff, but that explanation was all he had.

Luna was needling him. She was ticked that he hadn’t let her run after the madman shooting at them. And maybe he should have. Then she’d either have caught him or maybe be dead. He got to the tricky fingering in “Toxic” and concentrated for a moment as he played, then he stopped and looked over at her.

“You are the most frustrating woman I’ve ever met.”

“Ditto.”

He shook his head, wishing he’d brought his whiskey over with him. Instead, he started playing Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 2. He had to concentrate to remember it and play the notes correctly. It was one of the first pieces he’d mastered. The one he used when he needed to get back to his Zen.

But he wasn’t finding it. Jack dead. His father hiding letters from someone who’d been gloating after an incident that had almost killed him. Luna with her damned kissable mouth standing behind him, glaring at him. Making him want to take her. Right here in the middle of the penthouse on that thick Persian rug.

She was justified in being upset with him. He got that he’d hired her to keep him safe. But there weren’t words, or he didn’t know how to say them out loud, to tell her what it felt like when he watched someone else be shot instead of him.

He was weary. Like, soul-deep fatigued with this life. This was something that had started with his mother’s death. His entire life had been in the shadow of someone who hated him and his father. And, at this moment, there was no way out. No way for him to move past this.

“Nick, stop. That song...it’s sad.”

He stopped abruptly and turned around to face her, swinging his entire body. “You don’t like sad.”

“Who does?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Everyone should. That’s life, isn’t it?”

“It can be,” she said. “But then sometimes, in the middle of something huge like this, you can find peace.”

“Yeah, right,” he said. “Did you find peace in foster care?”

“I did,” she said. “It took me a while because everyone was always talking about finding a permanent family, and one day I decided I didn’t need one. I stopped looking at each house as anything but an opportunity to learn.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. How had this beautiful, complex woman never been wanted by a family? “That brought you peace?”

“It did. Find the thing that will bring you peace now,” she said.

Her words hung in the air between them.

“Let’s go see Verity’s ex. If nothing else, it will distract both of us,” he said.

He was aware of her following him down to the garage.
