“Okay, then.” Tate walked past him and Scotty cleared his throat behind him. Tate stopped in his tracks and turned around. “You look like you have something on your mind. You sure you don’t need anything else?”
Scotty smiled shyly. “I-I just wondered, I mean I know you was in the military or something… I ah, just thought I should ask ya, since my ma’s been bothering me to do something with my future…”
“Does she want you to join the military?”
“Well, no, sir. I think she just wants me to have a career or somethin’.”
Tate studied the boy. The truth was, he hadn’t had a whole lot of interaction with Scotty but he seemed to be a nice kid. He knew his father had died and his mother had emphysema. The family had owned the storage facility for as long as Tate could remember. Scotty had been only a little guy when he’d first begun storing his things here. The Marine Corps had been great for Tate. It had made a man out of him and the kid seemed like he needed a little direction. He dug his wallet out of the back pocket of his jeans and pulled out a card. He handed it to the kid.
“Here. One of the guys from my old unit runs the recruitment station down in North Hollywood now. His name is Lieutenant Sampson. This is his number. He can tell you all about career options in the military. You graduated high school, right?”
Scotty nodded. “Yes, Mr. Heston, and I never got into any trouble,” he added hopefully.
Tate reached out and patted Scotty’s bony shoulder. “That’s good. I think you’d be a good fit, Scotty.”
Scotty’s whole face lit up as he clutched the card as if it held the answer to his future. Yeah, the kid’s gonna be just fine. “Thanks again, Mr. Heston.”
“You’re welcome, Scotty.” Tate gave one final nod and turned, walking back toward his storage unit. It felt really good being able to point the kid in the right direction. The truth was, the Marines weren’t for everyone but Scotty would find out soon enough if he was going to be one of the ones who made it in the military. He smiled a little as he thought about the special kind of man it took to have a commitment like that. Chas’s face suddenly swam in his mind and he realized that even though Chas probably wouldn’t have chosen the same career path Tate had, he might have made a great Marine. He was most definitely naïve but the truth was, he was a man of honor, accepting his responsibilities in life the way he had. Hell, he’d stood up to his father like it was nothing for him to do so and in addition, he was openly gay which always took courage, especially with so much hostility directed toward the LGBT community. Tate admired bravery like that.
He got back to his storage unit and rolled the door up, looking into the small space crammed with his belongings as he felt his heart in his throat.
