Chapter Seven

What am I doing? Why am I doing it? How in the world will this benefit her life? She wants to be like me but she don't know who I am. She just knows what I look like. How the sway of my hips causes grown men to lose their minds. How I can send an entire audience into an uproar by simply turning to face them. How I can make a man believe that I am his alone in a room full of other men who think the same damn thing. Why does she want that? Does she know she doesn't need that? Does she know that all of this shit is only temporary, and that I am only a brief figment of someone's imagination? That's nothing to be proud of. That's not special. That's not even me.

"Where you going?" Zedra asked as I headed toward the door with my gym bag. It was the first day of "training" for Devyn and I wanted to beat her to the rehearsal room.

"It's Tuesday, you know where I'm going. There's food in the frig; hook something up for dinner. I don’t feel like eating out."

"Why can’t I ever come watch you rehearse? I wanna see what you do."

I forbid Zedra from having anything to do with anything I did at 1007. I couldn’t have her getting the wrong idea about my job. This wasn’t something that I planned on doing for the rest of my life. Aside from the fact that gravity wouldn’t allow it, I had other plans; business plans, and she'd be better off watching me practice that part than this one.

"Zeddi, stop. You’ve never watched me rehearse and you never will. Now go thaw out that chicken. I'm gonna be hungry when I get back. Love ya, kid."

She dragged her feet into the kitchen, and glared back at me in disappointment. "Yeah, love you too."

I made it to the car, still trying to convince myself that what I was about to do was okay. That this was a grown woman who had a specific goal and I was simply helping her to improve upon her craft. I kept repeating that to myself over and over again, but no matter how good it sounded, I couldn’t get over the fact that she was only a year older than Zedra. I couldn't help wondering how I would feel if someone was doing the same thing for my little sister that I was doing for Devyn. Would I be okay with some thirty-year-old stripper training my baby sister to be a super freak? Hell no, I wouldn’t. I'd be infuriated. But she wasn't my sister and I wasn’t hers. This was strictly business… unless I could convince her otherwise.

As I cranked the car and buckled my seatbelt, my phone vibrated in the cup holder. It was a text from Drew.

Hey, what you doin? -Drew

Hey. Nothin. Bout to head to 1007 and get some rehearsal in. -Me

Oh really? You need an audience? I'm free.
