Chapter Eleven

“Are you feeling any better today?” Evelina asked Jessica as she entered the warm, dark room.

“Not really,” Jessica sniffled. A moment later, she burst into tears. “I’m missing the entire Season! All the balls and musicales, and the dances . . .” Jessica continued to sob uncontrollably, wailing about everything she was missing out on.

“Oh, dearest,” Evelina soothed as she went to Jessica’s bedside and smoothed the tangled strands of hair off her damp face. “Don’t cry. It cannot be good for your megrim.” Jessica breathed in and out in huge breaths as she sniffled, trying to still her breathing. Once she was calmer, Evelina attempted to ease her concerns. “You won’t miss the entire Season, just a few days. I assure you, it is not as awful as you believe, and before long, you’ll be good as new and dancing once again.”

Evelina could hear the heartache in each word Jessica spoke. “But . . . but what if Mr. Drinkwater finds someone else?”

She wasn’t an expert in this area. Far from it. She’d never had the opportunity to form any sort of an attachment, to be wooed. “Then it wasn’t meant to be,” Evelina said, hoping the simple explanation was all that was needed.

“How did you know that my cousin was your heart’s true desire?” Jessica asked with a dreamy smile.

Oh dear, how was she to respond?

Evelina couldn’t very well shatter the young girl’s fantasy. Just because her marriage was not what she’d hoped for, that didn’t mean that Jessica should not find love and happiness. Jessica continued to sit in hopeful anticipation of a romantic story. Evelina thought back to the beginning, to the first time she’d first laid eyes on him, to the times when she and James were at the same functions, in the same room, and then the words started to pour from her mouth as if of their own accord.

“I suppose it was the way he looked at me. Subtle glances from across the room, the way his eyes followed me, watched me. And then . . . when he spoke. His deep, melodic voice . . .” her words trailed off and the butterflies in her stomach fluttered rapidly as if trying to escape and be free, free to explore, to explore the passion that had been simmering between her and James since the very beginning. She shook her head, trying to push away those thoughts. “You should probably get some rest. I’ll check on you later.”

Evelina did not wait for Jessica to respond but quickly dashed from the room. A nervousness coursed through her veins that she could not contain. But just as she closed the door to Jessica’s room, she came face to face with the man who had just been disturbing her thoughts and stirring desire.

“How is my cousin?” Although his words were laced with concern for his relative, his eyes—his delicious chocolate brown eyes—were centered on her, as if he’d just been reading her thoughts.

Heat flared in her cheeks and all words escaped her for a moment before she regained some semblance of her senses.
