For Those with Bipolar II and Their Family Members
Individuals with mood disorders often have a propensity towards some risky behaviors, including hypersexuality, substance abuse, gambling, and buying sprees. Being aware of this propensity can alert you and your family members to intervene and stop the behavior and then seek professional help before someone is hurt or money is lost.
No matter what the coexisting behavior or addiction, it is vital that the person with Bipolar II admit to the addiction or problem and seek ongoing professional help with a psychopharmacologist or psychiatrist.
Joining a support group is part of the treatment for addiction. You can search for specific support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, and Spenders Anonymous, and fellowship support groups such as Sexaholics Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, Sexual Compulsives Anonymous, and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. The only requirement for membership in any of these face-to-face support groups is a desire to stop the addictive behavior and get well.
Along with the support group, continue to see your doctor regularly, engage in psychotherapy, if needed, and stay on your medications. Even the most compulsive, addicted person with Bipolar II disorder can turn his or her life around and gain control of the initial bipolar problem—if he or she stays committed to the plan of action for recovery.
