CHAPTER 12

Lillian woke with a start. What in the world? The knocking on her apartment door sounded again. She stumbled out of bed and through the small front room. She pawed at the lock and opened the door. Billy smiled widely at her. No matter how sexy that smile was, it wasn’t the time to flash it. “What do you want? It’s the middle of the night.”

“No, it isn’t. It’s five-thirty. I’ll give you ten minutes to get ready for PT.” He dropped down and planted a kiss on her forehead. “You’re adorable in your jammies and all sleepy.”

Lillian looked down and then back up at him. “That’s because it’s the middle of the night. We don’t have to meet until seven.”

“Ah, the teams don’t. We’re cadre. We work out before the teams.” Billy put his hands on her shoulders and turned her around. “Running gear. Go.” He gave her a gentle push. “Ten minutes.”

Although she wasn’t sure what she said, Lillian grumped something in reply and returned to her bedroom, where she shed her warm flannel pajamas. So what if they had bunnies on them? She put her hair up in a messy bun and shoved a couple of hairpins through it to make sure it stayed in place. Her running gear was already laid out. She yawned and headed into the bathroom to brush her teeth. The cold tile floor woke her up more than the knock on her door. She brushed her teeth, then headed back into the bedroom to put on her gear. She opened the door, and Billy was leaning against the wall, waiting for her.

She blinked at him. How had she not noticed how many muscles were on display? He wore running shorts and a t-shirt that was spray painted on. Damn. “I know I’m not quite awake yet, but aren’t you dressed a bit too … little … to be running outside?” She waved at her joggers and lifted her insulated jacket.

“Well, if you want to run outside, we could, but I’d rather hit the treadmill and then maybe lift some weights.”

“There’s an inside gym?” Lillian dropped her head back. “Why hasn’t anyone told me that?”

Billy dropped his arm over her shoulders. “Did you ask?”

“Stop making sense. It’s too early,” she groaned as he moved her down the hallway. They walked into the common room and then entered a door she’d not opened. After about a two-minute walk, they entered a gymnasium. Ten treadmills, exercise bikes, weight machines of every kind, and a large selection of free weights. She recognized Adam, Mike, and the twins, who were doing pushups in the corner. Billy’s friend Isaac was lifting weights in that area, and he nodded to them as they entered.

“I had no idea this was here.”

She followed Billy to the treadmills. He got on one, and she shed her joggers, revealing her running shorts. “There is one above ground adjacent to the barracks.”

“Why didn’t I think to ask?” She looked at the panel on the treadmill and started the machine.
