“If you need anything Jenny can get it for you. Good night, kids. See you in the morning.” Bob and Wanda shuffled off to their bedroom, leaving them alone.

“Wow, what a day, huh?” Chase said.

“Yeah. I’m sorry about my mom. She’s only looking out for me.”

“I get it. My mom probably would do the same thing.”

“They really don’t meddle much in my life. I only hear from them about twice a month or so. They know I’m busy at work and I try to reach out to them when I can.”

“It’s hard when our parents get older and we’re far away, although a couple of hours away is not bad.”

“I should have told them about Penny.” She felt better for coming clean with him.

“It’s okay. I wouldn’t have said anything if you didn’t really want me to. But you know I’m pretty darn proud of her, so any time I get to toot her horn, I do.” He winked at her, causing her to acknowledge his statement.

“Oh, for sure, and you should be. She’s one special kid. I guess I was scared how they’d react.”

“I understand. It’s one thing to bring the boyfriend home and a totally different thing to bring a single daddy home.”

“Boyfriend?” She drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. She liked the way that sounded. But did she hear right?

“I think for all intents and purposes we are boyfriend and girlfriend. I hope you don’t just take anyone up to the hayloft.” He pulled her close and kissed her, stopping any further words and taking her breath away. “Oh, and by the way,” he said, taking a brief break from the kissing, “I really like your folks.”

“Shh.” She silenced him by putting her finger to his mouth. “Just kiss me. It’s the last thing I want to remember tonight.”

She held his gaze and then lowered hers to his desirable and tempting mouth. He lifted her chin and moved unhurriedly and purposefully toward her, causing her heart to pump hard. He tasted her with his tongue, and Jenny opened her mouth with a low moan, letting him know that she enjoyed it. She reached up and tangled her fingers in his hair, bringing him closer to her, if that were possible. She rolled her head one way and then the other as they kissed the night away, with only the sounds of the nearby wall clock softly keeping time.
