Breaking Away opens in American theaters. The Twentieth Century-Fox film, starring Dennis Christopher, wins the National Society of Film Critics “Best Picture” award in 1979. Writer Steve Tesich wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The part of one of the Italian Cinzano riders is played by John Vande Velde, father of future US Postal/Discovery/Garmin rider Christian Vande Velde. The rider Christopher’s character beats in the movie is played Indiana student Bill Brissman (Delta Chi), whose team would win the real Little 500 for the third consecutive time in 1981.

After Jonathan Boyer (Grab On) is penalized five minutes, Dale Stetina wins the fifth Red Zinger Classic without winning any of its eight stages. Wayne Stetina is third and junior rider Greg LeMond, who received special permission to compete in the race, finishes fourth.
