As the last of the passengers from the afternoon Channel tour disembarked, she was offered the usual compliments. She tried to act as though they warmed her heart, but since her thoughts were elsewhere, all she could manage was a tight smile.

Once she was alone, she slumped down onto one of the passenger benches with a weary sigh.

“Perhaps it would be a good idea if we took a few days off to recoup our energy from the storm.”

Tassy shook her head. That was the worst idea she could think of. She didn’t want to have any more time to think than she already did. “We need to continue earning money or we won’t ever leave this port.” She gestured to the sloop. “It’s only a matter of time before we sink everything that we have into fixing this vessel. I would prefer we found another ship before we were forced to do that.”

Liam sat down beside her. “I know that you have your heart set on leaving Burnham-On-Sea this year, but would it be so terrible if we had to wait another? Or even two?”

“And then what?” She shook her head sadly. “Three? Four? I don’t want to look in the mirror and see any regrets for what I never got to accomplish. I promised my father that I would do this for him. At this rate, I wonder if our dream will ever properly align with the fates.”

“It will. It’s important to keep the faith.” Liam reached over and squeezed her hand.

She smiled at him in gratitude. “Thank you.”

“Anytime. We’re family in the general sense, aren’t we?”

She bumped his shoulder playfully with hers. “That we are.” She reluctantly got to her feet. “I should be heading back to the boarding house.”

“Do you want me to escort you?”

She reached out and rubbed the top of his bald head and then tweaked his black beard. “It’s never been necessary, and it’s not necessary now.”

He grumbled something beneath his breath, but he said nothing else as she headed down the gangplank.

Tassy walked along the harbor for a time and then made her way down the strand. She thought of Fraser’s townhouse, which was situated parallel to this same path, and decided to alter her direction. She didn’t want to chance that she would risk running into him when she was still feeling rather uncertain about the way they had parted. She wondered if perhaps it wouldn’t be best if he left without speaking another word to her. It might certainly spare her any awkwardness when it came time for them to part.

She would miss the funds that he would have provided for her venture, but she would have to find another way to gain the extra blunt.

Again, Tassy thought of the number written on the card she’d been given by the mysterious Mr. Porter.

897. Would she discover what it meant?

As if divine providence was on her side, Tassy was walking along the main thoroughfare, and she spied some movement out of the corner of her gaze.
