‘You’d better be careful with Akshay, Gayatri,’ said Farah as she got into her car.

‘What do you mean?’ asked Gayatri, standing at the car window.

‘You know what I mean.’

‘I don’t.’

Farah smiled. ‘Okay. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you. I know you.’

‘Thanks for the warning, Aunty. But I don’t need it.’

Farah shrugged as she pulled out of the driveway with a smile, and drove away.

Gayatri looked back to see Amar and Akshay being escorted to their car by her whole family. Nandini was nowhere to be seen. She waited for the procession to reach her and gave Amar a hug, saying softly, ‘Don’t worry. Whatever it is, it’ll be okay.’

‘Thanks, Didi,’ he said.

She saw Akshay standing behind him.

He smiled at her, a little wryly. She smiled back. Just as his smile brightened, hers vanished abruptly.
