Homecoming
âMommy, itâs too loose around my waist. I want it tighter,â I whined as I stood in front of the floor length mirror in my room with my mom standing behind me, adjusting my homecoming dress.
Each of my sisters were in the room, and the way everyone was carrying on, getting all emotional, you would have thought this was my senior prom or I was about to get married or something. My mama was being the most dramatic, though. This morning, she was downstairs in the kitchen cooking breakfast for us, and I was helping. She burst out crying out of nowhere and swore that in a blink of an eye, I had grown up and was no longer her baby. I think I had to reassure her over ten times today that I would always be her baby. I was my momâs only child, although she did look at my sisters as her daughters as well, so I could see why me growing up could have her going through all kinds of emotions.
âBeretta, if you would just keep still, I can adjust it and make it a little tighter. Didnât the seamstress have you try this on? You should have told her to make it tighter. You should have showed me this dress before, so I could have adjusted it then,â my mama fussed as she stood behind me, doing everything she could to make the dress have a tighter fit.
Benelli was going around the room with a camera in her hands, snapping pictures for memories while Nyne and Uzi were setting up my accessories on the bed.
âMommy, when I got there yesterday to pick up the dress, it was like three other girls there to pick up their dresses. I was trying to be on time for my nail appointment, so I just picked it up, paid her the balance, and left,â I said, with a bit of annoyance in my voice because looking in the mirror, this damn dress was wearing me.
Our theme for homecoming was Coming to America. My inspiration for my dress was, of course, Vanessa Bell Calloway. In the beginning of the school year, when the school announced the homecoming date along with the theme, I knew what look I wanted to do for the dance. The gown was beautiful. A very popular designer in Miami had designed it for me. Uzi and Benelli, who were both heavily into fashion had put their input into the dress and tweaked some stuff because this was a high school homecoming, so it still needed to be appropriate.
I was originally trying to come out with the top part see through, but my mama quickly shut that down. The dress was black and gold, just like in the movie. My mom was standing behind me, pulling the dress together, trying to give me more of that snatched look that I was going for. Aries had done my hair. This was my first time in my life wearing weave, but Iâd only done it get a fuller look.
