Tinker, Evers, and Chance (left to right, in 1911) may have been sent to the Hall of Fame as much because of a poem as their baseball. Chance batted .296 and fielded .984 over seventeen major league seasons, and steered the Cubs to a 768-389 record as a manager, winning two World Series and another two NL pennants. Always a hustler, he still holds the Cubs record for stolen bases, with an even four hundred. In addition to being a key part of those teams, Evers won a third World Series title with the Boston Braves, retiring with .270 in batting and .953 in fielding. Tinker batted a more modest .262 and fielded .938 over a fifteen-year career with the Cubs and Chicago Whales. He was, though, a clutch hitter who is the only member of the trio in each of the Cubs’ all-time top twenty rankings for hits, doubles, triples, and RBIs.
