Chapter Ten

The next morning, Tabitha awakened early, determined she would make it to the Center that day. She had missed yesterday morning's workout. That had been the first weekday exercise session that she had not made it to, since joining the Imani Center a year ago.

As she pushed her arms into her t-shirt, she frowned. She had missed her afternoon volunteer session as well...seeing that she now had her work with Dave, every weekday from two to six.

She decided that maybe Mrs. Smith could allow her to read to the preschool class at the Center in the mornings now, instead of the afternoons. She would have to see if she could speak to her about it when she arrived.

Tabitha pulled her hair into a ponytail. Then she began her morning prayer. As she talked to the Lord, she realized that she had a lot to be thankful for in her life at that moment-- a lot of which was connected to Dave. She realized that God was working through Dave. Working through Dave to affect positive changes in her life.

She bowed her head and smiled. Only a few days ago, she had been homeless-- in the cold, alone, sleeping in the back of her SUV in the local WalMart's parking lot. Today, she had a roof over her head, and a warm dry place to sleep.

She shook her head and tears slowly trickled down her cheeks. God was good. She even had a job now, one that paid well. So well in fact, that she would be able to reopen her savings account, and begin squirreling away money again.

As she stood there in the bedroom, slowly rocking back and forth she looked heavenwards and whispered, thank you, to God for his many blessings and for answering her prayers.

When Tabitha walked up the steps of the Imani Center that morning, she looked over her shoulder...half-way expecting to see Dave. But he was nowhere around.

She opened the front door and approached the service desk, a bright smile on her face.

“Good morning, Mr. Gatling.”

He smiled brightly in return and gave her his usual greeting. “Good morning, Sunshine.” He paused for a moment and tilted his head to the side. “Now, where you been at? We missed you here day before yesterday.”

Hm, Tabitha thought to herself. She wasn't quite sure of what to say to Mr. Gatling. She had stayed at Dave's place so late, star-gazing, that she hadn't awakened early enough the following morning to make it to the Center for her regular workout.

He swiped her membership card, handed her a fluffy white towel, and shook his head. “Don't worry Sunshine. I'm gonna have a talk with that boy...remind him that it's not proper, having you out so late courting. So late that you can't make it here on time for your workout.”

Tabitha took the membership card that he'd handed back to her. She was speechless. Then she became angry. How dare Dave spread rumors that they were courting. They weren't dating, she'd told him that.
