Sixteen

Fenix

I exit the shower amid a cloud of steam and wrap a towel around myself. My mind is still reeling with the events of last night. I can’t believe that Lautyr just threw me over his shoulder and hauled me off like some kind of caveman.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it when a guy takes charge and moves me around in the bedroom, but being taken against my will and transported onto a flying freaking saucer is where I draw the line. Actually, I draw the line a lot earlier than that.

I can understand Lautyr’s reasoning, and his fears, but I think he’s learned the error of his ways. That doesn’t mean I’ve forgiven him. No way. Just that I think he knows now how much he messed up.

Sitting down on the sofa, I pick up my data pad and look through my contacts until I find pops. He’s not in my contacts list, so I have to go through the dozens of spam calls before I finally find his number. When he finally answers, I try to put a smile on my face.

“Hey, pops.”

“Baby—I mean, Fenix. How can I help you?”

“I was wondering if you’d like to join me for lunch? There’s an Alzhonian restaurant that’s supposed to be absolutely divine.”

“Alzhon food tends to arrive with its legs still attached. And there are usually a lot of legs. I don’t suppose you had any other ideas?”

Inside, I curse, because the Alzhonian place has intimate booths where we aren’t likely to be overheard. Fortunately, I have a back up plan.

“All right, what about seafood? There’s a human restaurant near the pier.”

“Near the pier? With all the soldiers running around?”

God damn it, stop being so fucking picky.

Out loud, my response is far more diplomatic.

“Pops, you’re going to have to put up with some things if you’re going to eat in public. I thought maybe you’d like to spend time with me, that talking to your daughter would be worth the hassle, but…”

“No, it’s fine. The seafood place sounds good. Do you want me to pick you up?”

“Nah, I’ll pick you up. My car is nicer.”

“All right. When?”

“How about an hour?”

“Sounds good.”

The call ends and I go slip into a pair of hip hugging pants and a v neck blouse with flared out sleeves. This is it. My first unofficial spy mission. I’m going to try and pry information out of my father, and barring that, learn just how much or little he’s privy to.

My hover limo slides through the arena gates and heads for downtown. Pops has put himself up in a nice but not luxurious hotel in a historic but not nice neighborhood. Fortunately there’s an IHC security depot right next door to the hotel, so I don’t have to worry about waiting outside for Pops to come down.

The driver hustles to open the door for my father, then rushes back to his driver’s compartment. I don’t think he likes this neighborhood any more than I do.

We roll along toward the pier, and my father settles in next to me.
